I can’t get too excited about Tito vs Forrest but I can get excited about Matt Serra and Forrest hanging out and somebody videoing it.

I enjoyed that. Really looking forward to next weekend, too.

How in the hell is this not going to be amazing? The drama is so huge result almost doesn’t even matter. Either Anderson wins and cements himself as the ultimate ninja or Chael wins and we get possibly an even bigger rubber match.

Sure was neighbourly of Anderson to invite Chael back to his place for barbeque. Looks like The American Gangster might get his medium rare steak after all.

The move which turned the fight really was more of that Anderson Is Neo malarky, when he backed across the cage, Chael stalking after him, and ducked Chael’s punch before clocking Chael with that perfect counter hook which wobbled him. In la la land first Chael’s chain wrestling fails him as Anderson stuffs his takedown attempt, then shortly afterward Chael not only makes the weird decision to throw a fancy spinning back elbow at the most elusive striker in MMA, he completely loses his balance – again, because he’s still out of his head recovering from that right hook.

I really hope Forrest is seeing a therapist. Or at least a witchdoctor.

Yeah, at first I was a little disappointed that it ended so quickly. But now looking back, I think it was a pretty awesome fight, and Anderson showed everyone why he’s the best. I think the simple truth is that Chael did in fact make a mistake, and Anderson is just the kind of guy who can capitalize on a mistake like that.

The Forrest and Tito fight is another story altogether. I thought it was a really entertaining fight, even though I’m not a huge fan of Tito. Here’s the main point I’ve wanted to make though – Forrest interviewing Tito at the end – what’s the big deal? What revelatory thing would Tito have said if he had been interviewed by Joe? I think there’s only a few select fighters that actually say something of interest during the post-fight interview, and Tito’s definitely not one of them. In fact, Tito says the same damn things after every fight, and sometimes repeats himself during one answer. “Fought with my heart and soul, I’m a warrior, I leave it all out there, it is what it is.” There, that’s the Tito interview.

Now, Forrest had no business leaving the octagon, so there’s that. But history has shown that Forrest has the tendency to make things memorable, and what he did was cement Tito’s final moments in the octagon in every UFC fan’s mind, and I don’t think there’s a better send off than that. If Tito’s all a company man now, then one day he’s going to realize that.

Forrest’s first question being “You had some big pre-fight duties, was that why you got tired in this fight?” was just a dumb question in the circumstances. It comes across like “Hey, guy that I just beat, I didn’t get tired in there, why did you get tired?”. I think Forrest thought it was a good question, but it was just something no fighter wants to hear from the opponent he’s just lost to. But I think it’s mostly just that Tito is a sentimental and emotional guy and Joe Rogan, like Tito, is a UFC institution. I think it means a lot to a lot of fighters to have Joe interview them afterwards because of what he represents and also because he’s really damn good at it. Now Tito’s last moments in the octagon are remembered because of Forrest acting like a weirdo instead of Tito having the spotlight.

As for Chael’s mistake, I don’t think it was a particularly big mistake. I see a lot of people focusing on the “decision” to throw a spinning backfist and not realising that Chael was out of his head because of the right hook. He didn’t suddenly become a dumb fighter and throw a dumb shot and clumsily fall over. He got his bell rung doing something he was able to do successfully the last time they fought, which was throwing a straight punch while Anderson had his hands down.

I’m not saying that Forrest was in the right, I’m just saying that it is more memorable than what Tito would have come up with to do. I understand the institution that is Joe Rogan and all that, but dammit, I laughed. And I was already not looking forward to Tito saying the same damn thing over and over, so I was pleased. I guess for a guy that’s made so much money and had so much fame over the years and had earlier in the day been inducted into the UFC HOF, he might’ve been a little more willing to go with it. In fact, during the post-fight press conference and the Fuel TV post-fight show, he repeated himself so much that if I had started a drinking game based on the Tito-isms I had outlined earlier, I would be dead of alcohol poisoning.

I guess maybe it’s because I think Tito was a legend in his time, sure, but he’s sort of a weak one when you consider Randy and Chuck. And, if Forrest was doing it to be mean, it would’ve been a different story. He was trying to entertain, and for me, it worked.

Ok, I get it Robby, you wish Tito had just died in the cage and saved your precious ears from having to hear him be honoured for all he’s done for this great sport. Why don’t you just say that you heartless sonofabitch?!?

After Mark Hunt the fighter I get most nervous for is James Te Huna, because I’m a biased, jingoistic bastard. Beating Joey Beltran probably isn’t going to move him into title contention but losing would definitely move him backwards.

Should have known that you stick with the Kiwis. I just want to see a good fight. Joey’s story is interesting (cut from UFC, drop to 205, wins in a small event, back to UFC), so it’s going to be fun to see how it plays out.

And I really am completely ambivalent towards Tito, actually, because I came into the sport late. All I’ve seen is big talk and little fight. Randy and Chuck were more competitive at the end of their careers.

This is pretty cool. A little “why MMA is so awesome” type video. Lots of great highlights and behind the scenes stuff I’d never seen. Also, Hans Zimmer’s “Time” from the Inception soundtrack is the background, so yeah.

Lotta truth in that vid. Did you listen to Chael on Rogan’s show Rob?

Also, how about James Te Huna setting the new record for most significant strikes in a round at light heavyeight. WITH A BUSTED UP ARM AND FOOT!!!

    Calm down there, sir.

I don’t listen to anything much lately. Either movies or books. I like Joe, but I find his humor a bit annoying, and he seems to use profanity like Game of Thrones uses nudity.

James Te Huna was quite impressive. I was also impressed with Joey’s stability, but it’s gotta be hard to only be back in the UFC to be a punching bag.

Yeah, I get bored with the overabundance of conspiracy and tripping talk so don’t listen to Rogan’s show regularly but when I hear that Chael was on there I download that sucker quick smart. And it was a really damn good conversation.

I’m really pumped for Faber/Barao tomorrow, there’s no way those two animals don’t put on an entertaining show, plus we get to see what Hector Lombard is made of at the top level. Always good to watch Ebersole do his thing too.

Yeah, that. Dana said that the middleweight division will have answers tonight, and he will announce plans after the fight. Yippee!
