Good morning, you magnificent bastard! You’re watching this, right? I’ve had it on, but unfortunately, I’ve been preoccupied with ol’ hole in the belly.

You got Mark, right? I mean, I know you WANT him to win…

So, not too bad of a night! Shame about Te Huna – think he may be done. But those last three fights were great! I especially liked seeing Lombard get his ass beat.

Yeah, really bummed about James Te Huna. I’m sure I bragged about the time I took a class with him back in 2012 I guess it would have been. Super nice, humble dude to talk to as well, but he always had a terrible habit of getting hit while slinging leather when his strength was wrestling. Even in his wins he would often get rocked early on – the Jimmo fight being a prime example.

Sure was cool to see Mark win again, especially over a legend (albeit a faded one) like Frank Mir. Also cool to see Magney with that amazing comeback. I saw him live when he fought in Auckland and always liked him from TUF, even if he’s never been a spectacular showman or anything.

And get well soon dude, I believe in you. Hole in the guts and all.

I feel like I need to do an update show, but nobody leaves me alone! Nah, it’s actually nice since I can’t change my own dressings, but it’s hard to do a show with other people in the house.

I like the fact that the UFC hasn’t been doing shows every weekend. I actually missed it watching this one.

Mir getting popped is a bummer but Lyoto getting popped is legit heartbreaking almost. I really thought he was one of the honourable ones. Maybe because I’m a little bit racist and he’s a little bit Japanese.

That was pretty funny! Yeah, it doesn’t sound like it’s like super performance enhancing – apparently what he took is available at GNC. Now, that doesn’t exactly make it okay since the supplement he took clearly has something in it that’s banned, but from what I’ve been able to gather, it’s not on the level of TRT or anything like that. If you watch Thursday’s MMA Beat, they talk about it pretty extensively, and it changed my initial opinion of Lyoto and strangely enough, Yoel Romero as well.

Yeah, I haven’t heard the latest MMA Beat yet but Ariel’s been very strong on the MMA Hour a couple of times insisting Yoel had no part in what happened around his test failure. Frank Mir also put out a special episode of Phone Booth Fighting, his own podcast, immediately after he popped and he’s extremely convincing in his claim of innocence on that. Hard not to be cynical though.

Dang UFC, what’s with these events at 4am on a Monday morning? It’s almost as if they aren’t catering to an NZ audience or something.

Meanwhile, here’s Nate Diaz bareknuckle fighting at 16:

There’s also a new entry in The Reem doco series. Not sure whether you’re a fan or not, but either way I find him a pretty fascinating dude. This most recent one has a bunch of stuff from Jackson/Winks in it.

Yeah, that one was strange. The main card started at 1 pm for me on Sunday.

I’m not a huge fan of Alistair, but I’m curious to see if he gets the title shot. Interesting how he’s stepped his game up.

For this weekend, I was really bummed when I heard Anderson was out, because I thought the fight with Uriah Hall was a great fight. The 198 card still has a lot of greatness to see, though.

Ah, see 1pm Sunday about pretty normal for us in NZ. In winter they start at 2pm and in summer at 4pm (daylight savings) on Sundays. Can be a pain in the ass when it conflicts with social stuff but usually works out fine.

I’m actually secretly glad Anderson’s out of the fight, I just felt sad watching him fight Bisping. Hopefully Shogun’s gall bladder plays up too. Really amped for the co-main and main of 198 though. Vitor off the TRT is fascinating to me, still a sharp, sharp striker even if he seems short on gas. And if Stipe can keep the main event standing it’s going to be a lot of fun to see his boxing vs Werdum’s muay thai.

Are you setting me up? I think you’re setting me up, so I’ll say it – I hope Jacare DESTROYS Vitor. And that’s all I’m gonna say.

Wish granted. Vitor got smoooooooooked. Smoked so bad Jacare even seemed to be toying with him to prolong the beat-down even as Vitor appeared to be trying to find ways to give up.

Crazy seeing Werdum lose his head like that, he’s normally super crafty. Nothing he did, from his mentality to his body to his technique looked as on-point as it did against Cain. Maybe he only does his best a mile above sea level? Good for Stipe though. He’s not the most interesting dude around, but I love the idea that his firefighting buddies were going nuts seeing their boy become Heavyweight Champion of The World. And seeing him hollering “I’m the world champion!” while embracing his team, as if he was trying to make himself believe it, was pretty dang golden.

Also, how much do you wish Demian Maia had got his ass to WW a decade ago instead of toiling at MW? He’s so awesome, but so old for a WW. The clock is ticking for that dude.

Of course, I love the fact that Vitor looked so bad. A cheater gets what he deserves. I’m sorry if there are fans out there – it’s really hard for me to see him as anything else. A person who’s willing to do what he’s done isn’t worth anything.

But yeah, Jacare was badass. Interesting to see if they give him the next shot.

Werdum said that he was trying to get a big win in front of the huge crowd. I’m not trying to not give Stipe credit, but in this case, I think Werdum is more to blame, not so much for the loss, but for the way he lost. Stipe is kinda fun and all, sure. Let’s see how he handles the Reem.

Maia is really amazing. I was sort of mad watching the fight, not so much for the way he beat Brown, but more because I hated that matchup. I honestly feel kinda bad for anybody that Maia fights, because the dude has so few holes in his game. Interesting to see what they do with him next.

Bummer about Jacare’s surgery, I guess Bisping will have to do. Happy for the Count though, he’s toiled long and hard for this opportunity.

I feel like if Maia was 5 years younger and always in shape he’d be in with a shout at being champion. Lawler is takedownable and Maia’s takedowns are super crafty. He doesn’t use power at all, just pure technique. Remembering how he manhandled Rory, as if Rory didn’t even belong in the UFC, for a round you have to wonder how that fight would have gone if Maia’s camp wasn’t cut with setting up his new gym/business and he was in proper condition. The way he gassed after a round of dominance was just goofy. Nobody gets tired when they’re winning unless something is off, and he’s been fine in other 3 and 5 round fights.

Anyway, here’s an article on Anderson’s career I thought was interesting (although kind of sad too, remembering his best days are far behind him): https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/sports/wp/2016/05/05/anderson-silva-and-the-wrong-side-of-the-aging-curve/

Pat Wyman is one of my favourite technical analysts and I feel like he really nails it in that one but I’d be curious to see what you think.
