ParticipantI like your perspective that the guy who gets closer to finishing should win the round even if the other guy has controlled more of the round. I didn’t think the arm triangle gave Thomson any problems, but it was still closer than Thomson got even though he spent so long in a dominant position. If one guy lands 45 jabs in a round but gets dropped by an opponent who’s only landed 7 strikes in the round, the second guy probably deserves the round.

ParticipantYeah, round one. Benson was in no danger, even though Josh had a dominant position. Submission attempts and damage should count more than dominant positions, IMO, although you have to take into account scarring, like Nick Diaz. He cuts easy, along with many other seasoned fighters.

ParticipantJosh was making plenty of sub attempts every time he took Bendo’s back, but Bendo did such an effective job of fighting them off none of them got close. I’m sure part of why I leaned toward Josh was how easily he seemed to outgrapple Bendo, who’s usually the ace grappler, even after his hand was broken. Shades of Maia’s Fitching of Fitch.
I listened to Matt Erickson explain his 49-46 for Bendo and between him and you on Bendo’s side I’ve put down my pitch fork and extinguished the torch I was about to storm Sal D’Amato’s compound with.

ParticipantWhen there’s a decision, there’s controversy. When there’s a stoppage, there’s controversy.
What did you think of Herb’s decision Robby?

ParticipantI agree with most of the sentiments of people interviewed – it was a bit premature, but you can’t argue with erring on the side of caution. For the record, I didn’t see the thumbs up either.
I didn’t think it was a particularly bad night of fights, contrary to Dana’s sentiments. I find that since I’ve been doing the training, I enjoy the fights more, even the “boring” ones.
The Trujillo/Varner fight, though – what a performance from those two.

ParticipantI agree but for me it only seemed like it was premature in hindsight, especially since the thumbs up was on the wrong side. At the time Herb stopped it Urijah had been rocked three times, one of which had dropped him, and in that last barrage there were more than a dozen blows where Urijah was turtled. Even if only half of those strike actually hit him in the head, that’s too many for the ref not to ignore the fact he’s not moving. Especially since turtling is very often code for “I don’t want to tap to strikes but I want you to stop the fight Mr Referee.”
And yeah, bummer not to see a single sub but glad that meant Trujillo and Varner got an extra $25K each for that beautiful madness.

ParticipantI’ve been house sitting my in-laws’ house in Pantego, TX over the last few days. What else is in Pantego, TX? Just the gym that Johny Hendricks uses for his training camp.
I went in not knowing what to do. There was barely anyone there, and when you first walk in, there’s a desk that looks like it’s from a doctor’s office. To the right is the entrance to the gym area, so I just walked right in.
And there’s an octagon. Hmm. Over to the left, weights. A lady comes up to me, I tell her I’m interested in jiujitsu, she directs me back to the entrance. There’s a dude there welcoming some guys in. I don’t know them, except for Kelvin Gastelum. Wow! Talk to the guy for a while, name’s Tony. He says they’re preparing for a title fight, and there’s no classes being done right now. Says he’d invite me to stay, but the workouts are private, and Johny will be here any minute. Takes my name and number, and I leave.
I would’ve stuck around longer to see Johny, but I figured it’s best I not distract him. Cool, though, no?

ParticipantHeck yeah Robby Michaels, good for you for not being too intimidated to go down there. I’ve been visiting fighters gyms for more than a decade, first for muay thai and more recently for BJJ/MMA, and even though I’ve always found the peeps who use them very welcoming and cool I still get a little bit of the ol’ butterflies going into one I’ve never been in before.
I really rate Kelvin Gastelum. I was calling him “Little Cain” before it was cool. Even before I was cool. He fights the same night as Johny and Rick Story is going to be an intriguing challenge for him.

ParticipantSo, did you watch yesterday’s Fight Night? Do you have Fight Pass? What the hell is going on?
March 3, 2014 at 12:35 am #62772Bucho
ParticipantIt was live at 2am NZ time and I’ve been stupid busy so I’ve only watched a couple of fights thus far – Mitrione/Jordan and the TUF finale. Haven’t seen the main event yet. Jordan was looking good – or Mitrione was looking bad – until the fateful shot landed. The finale was dynamic enough to be fun even though I had no idea who those guys are. What the hell is going on with you?

ParticipantI didn’t watch it live either, since it started at 5:45 am here. I’m loving fight pass though – the quality is great, even if the fight library isn’t 100% yet.
I’ve been here, man! And I guess you’ve been too busy to listen to my last two movie review shows, too. Or maybe you did, and they just weren’t good enough to comment on, which in that case, I can understand.

ParticipantHoly crap, I haven’t even been checking the shows section. Somehow with the new site I’ve gotten into the habit of just quickly scanning the new threads and new replies on the right there, and I guess other posts have pushed your Robshow posts out of the most recent 3 by the time I’ve checked in so they’ve been below my shitty radar. I gotta recalibrate that sucker.
But yeah, when I say busy I mean in the last 6 weeks I’ve only had one Sunday off. I’ve worked like 41 out of the last like 42 like days or something, and many of those days have been 12+ hours, like a damn fool. On the plus side that one Sunday was UFC 170 so I did get to kick back and catch that live and fresh. Shame about the main and co-main but I thought most of the other fights delivered.

ParticipantWell, since you’re the only one who ever comments, you’re the only one I know listens. I thought that might’ve been the case – I’m glad I said something.
DC looked great, though, didn’t he? And Ronda – she landed a liver shot. I don’t think that was a bad stoppage at all. I thought it was awesome to see her win with something other than an armbar. I’ve been impressed with her ever since TUF – some of the things she did in that gym just blows my mind. Like there was one when she was lying flat on her back and was shimmying across the ground, and it was just amazing.
Did you see the main event on Saturday’s Fight Night yet? It was crazy.
March 4, 2014 at 12:16 am #62776Bucho
ParticipantDC and Ronda both looked great. Ronda ate four or five good hard rights to the noggin from McMann before she wrapped up that clinch and dominated it, so we now know how she reacts to getting proper hit. I’m thought Herb’s decision was premature, especially in context of how many blows to the head he let TJ Waldburger take earlier in the night. I agreed with him on the Barao/Faber decision a couple weeks ago though, and he took heat for that one too.
