ParticipantYou know how there are a bunch of amateur peeps on YouTube doing previews and post-show wraps? You could do that but actually be someone worth watching. Especially if you started off by specialising in looking at Invicta, because the WMMA market is one that has far less coverage at this point and you could probably get some audience built up fairly quick to use as a launch pad to doing Bellator and UFC stuff. The key would be keeping them shortish, like between 2 and 4 minutes, at first, because people are much more likely to open a short vid with 2:26 on the clock than one with 7:39 on it.
If you didn’t mind spending some time editing I’m sure you could combine your love of the game with your natural charm and bring the listeners back. In fact the real stroke of genius to differentiate you from the masses could be if you actually filmed it while driving, set up a dashboard cam like you and Bryan did that one time, and mixed in with the MMA talk would be your trademark complaining about and/or hollering at other drivers. Have a printout or iPad mounted in your eyeline with the cards line-up and talking points and you’re away. You’d probably spend 4-6 minutes recording it and cut it down in the edit to 2-3 to give it punch and insert pics of the fighters (good way to cover the edit points if you don’t want them to be obvious) and you’ll be viral as fuck in no time.

Agreed with pretty much eveything you said. The one point we may differ is in the fact that with Cain/Bigfoot on the same card as JDS/Hunt it makes perfect sense to have JDS/Hunt be a #1 contender bout. Having the champ wait for the JDS/Hunt winner to go through a whole fight cycle maybe holds up the belt unnecessarily, and I’m tired of champs only defending twice a year or less.
If the champ is healthy I want the belt to be kept in play, which is something I like a lot about Bendo and Bones. From Shogun through to Vitor, Bones gave us 5 title fights in 18 months. From Frankie I through to Gil, Bendo gave us 4 title fights in 14 months. It sucks waiting so long for Aldo to fight Pettis when both are healthy. It also sucks waiting 6+ months between every Anderson title fight. If the Cain/Bigfoot winner is healthy get him another fight asap I say. Be it Roy or the JDS/Hunt winner I don’t care, but don’t have the champ on the sidelines.

ParticipantDo you read Ben Fowlkes’ pieces Robby? I know MMA Fighting is your main site for fight so you probably know who he is, but just wondering if you read his work at MMA Junkie/USA Today. I think he’s the best opinion columnist in the sport. Very thoughtful, super smart and also has a pretty good sense of humour.

ParticipantYeah, I don’t pay attention to him as much since he left MMAfighting.com. I do like him though.

ParticipantMan, what an awesome night of fights. Seriously, probably the card of the year so far. I am for sure doing a post and pre fight show this week.
Good things the fights were great, because I noticed something very unfortunate – Brittney Palmer is now on my shitlist, because I noticed tonight that she got lip injections, and that, to me, is a deal breaker. So, Brittney, if you’re reading this, you officially fucked up. That’s right, no Rob Michaels in your future, so let’s see how you deal with that, you overpaid whore!

ParticipantI liked it, but can’t say it was one of the year’s best cards. I needed at least one of the top three match-ups to throw up an upset but they turned out pretty much as one-sided as expected. The three guys who lost were massive underdogs so it would have been much more fun – even putting aside my obvious bias – to see one of them get up to take a fight.
But TJ vs Gray and Holloway vs Bermudez were fantastic, Cowboy is always fun to watch win or lose and Robert Whittaker (born in NZ!!!) showed a fascinating, possibly karate/hapkido-influenced low lead hand style and formidable TDD in overpowering Colton. Khabib’s Sambo throws are also fascinating to watch but I did start to find them repetitive. Very effective obviously – at least against the level of opponent he’s been matched with so far – but somewhat monotonous if he doesn’t finish, and that fight was yet another mismatch. Wonderboy vs Nah-Shon was pretty boring although I admit to only half watching that one. I barely remember Pyle/Story except for being a little surprised at the decision. The only fight I missed was the infamous Stephens/Payan bloodbath.
There were positives in the co-main and main though – Junior was getting easily timed and countered by Mark early on but he adjusted smartly and huge props to him for choosing to go for a finish even though he was clearly ahead on points. It’s rare thing to put Mark Hunt out so that’s a huge feather in Junior’s cap and I’m stoked we’ll see him go with Cain again, because Cain looked pretty much perfect to me in dismantling Bigfoot again.
I should probably be stun-gunned for not paying enough attention to Brittney to notice that though.

ParticipantI’ll be honest – I didn’t actually notice until there was a straight-on shot directly in front of the two sitting there promoting their swimsuit issue thing very late in the card. The way the two of them are shot when they come off the octagon, there’s so many lights and stuff, and then they turn and there’s the butt, and at that point, you’re not focusing on face anymore. Once I noticed, though, I couldn’t see anything else. I freeze framed it at one point, and it’s so obvious that both of them have had that procedure done, it’s just sickening.

ParticipantMeisha moves in to tussle with Ronda again, HOOOOOOOOOOO BOY!!!
I think the fight turns out the same way at the end of it but I can’t wait to see these two sniping at each other. There’s no way they play as nice as Chael and Bones did last year. And as much as Brian Caraway isn’t the most likeable dude I kind of feel sorry for him considering the heat he’s going to catch over this.

I didn’t love the event as a whole as much as you but apart from the fact I have watched TUF Smashes and know who Robert Whittaker is I think I pretty much agreed with everything you said about 160, I just would have done more to emphasize that in addition to his sponsorship troubles Mark’s interrupted prep had left him too short on acclimatization time so he was pretty much jetlagged in there against Junior, not to mention that he broke his toe in the first round so was effectively fighting as if his feet were encased in concrete and lava.
Mark may not make excuses for himself but I sure will.

ParticipantI don’t feel sorry for him at all. He opens his mouth, dumb shit comes out. They’re like the annoying couple that always seems to be around at get togethers. Like you don’t hate them, but for some reason, it seems to be better when they’re gone.
There are a lot of things that are interesting about this season. For me, it’s that they’re coaching possible contenders for the future. Will their training be a little more guarded? Interesting dynamics for sure.

ParticipantCan’t stop feeling bummed out for Big Country, especially given his contract situation, but man is it exciting to see how much Stipe has improved. I mean, Roy has too many UFC losses to have ever seemed like he was ever going to be a real A-grade HW but he’s still a solid test for anyone in the division and to dominate him so completely like Stipe did – especially when Roy was more motivated than ever – was quite an eye-opener.
Not one of the great events overall though. I always like watching Hendo fight just because it always feels like oblivion is only ever a split second away for any opponent whose name doesn’t rhyme with Mogun Mua, and Delorme/Figueroa, Rosi/Davis and Stout/Krause were fun enough, but I can barely remember anything else outside of Shawn Jordan’s uppercuts. Matter of fact the most memorable thing in MMA by far from the weekend is still Burkman/Fitch.

ParticipantRight on all counts. I think Delorme/Figueroa should have won fight of the night, for sure.
Burkman was impressive, and I’m curious to see what kind of tests they can get for him after Fitch. I’m also looking forward to Bellator coming back, and the new Fight Master series.
In other news, Dana said that TUF is so bad right now, and the hatred between Rousey and Tate is so fierce, that they’re not sure how much they’ll be able to air. I’d say that’s a good problem to have, since Sonnen and Jones were beating each other off all last season.
