ParticipantI don’t know if you listen to the MMA hour with Ariel, but he just had GSP’s jiujitsu coach on, and my excitement for this fight is hitting a fever pitch. I love hearing from someone that you can’t use blanket statements about this guy’s got better jiujitsu or better boxing, that you have to identify specific elements that can put one guy above the other. It’s refreshing to hear.
He also spoke about Silva vs Weidman, and that Weidman has pretty much morphed into a larger GSP, and that he is a very tough matchup for Silva. It’s amazing that someone can generate so much excitement with such simple statements.
And did you hear the conference call from last week? It was fascinating.
March 11, 2013 at 7:49 pm #28999Bucho
ParticipantOh yeah, that conference call was a classic. I didn’t hear it live but I did listen to it before I’d heard anything about the shenanigans so it all came into my ears without knowing what to expect and the way it developed was a surprise and was awesome. I mean, it’s never a surprise when Nick goes off on one, but the gold is in the details.
I haven’t heard that MMA Hour yet but I saw a short video yesterday of GSP saying he doesn’t just think Weidman will win, he’ll finish Anderson. And who’s going to argue with him? Not me. And you can’t make me. I’ll run. And I’ll keep running. There’s no way I’m telling GSP he’s wrong, not even on The Internet.

ParticipantToday’s really about Hendricks/Condit, right? GSP might end up a little lumpy and bloody but it’s alsmot inevitable he’s going to have Diaz sussed, so the question is all about what Hendricks can do against The NBK to keep himself in that #1 slot, right?
Did you see Ariel vs Dana at the presser though? At about 2:20 of the vid –

The whole thing’s worth watching just because Nick is such an intriguing character with his sympathetic/dirtbag dichotomy, and GSP’s reactions are pretty golden, but Dana acting so protectively of Nick (and unfairly toward Ariel) seems to have become the main news item from it. Also love the bit about 16:20 or so where Nick is on about “wolf tickets” and GSP asks a laughing Carlos what the fuck are “wolf tickets”.

ParticipantThe funny thing about the Ariel/Dana thing was that it didn’t matter who asked the first question – that was going to be the first question no matter who asked it. I thought it was funny. Dana appreciates Ariel, and he almost treats him like a little brother, from what I’ve seen.
It’s going to be interesting to see if GSP keeps his head on straight – he always has, but it also seems like he’s never been this pissed off. It’s already been fun.

ParticipantOh, and there was this Saturday night. Eesh.

ParticipantYeah, that was kind of glorious.

ParticipantGlad the women got Fight of the Night but I wanted Meisha to win, even if it was only to have her and Ronda sniping at each other in TUF.
Urijah looked awesome. Saw somewhere someone made the point that when he’s not fighting one of three guys he seems unstoppable. Even against Cruz he had really good moments. It’s like he’s one step down from the top and everyone else not named Cruz, Barao or Aldo is two steps down.

ParticipantYeah, Meisha got to coasting and then found herself beat. Serves her right.
Urijah can be impressive, but yeah, another title fight? It’s the only thing that really makes sense.
This weekend’s pretty badass. Can’t wait to see Bendo beat the poo out of Melendez.
April 22, 2013 at 9:42 am #29003Bucho
ParticipantDuuuuuuuuude, I know you have a little bit of a chubby for Bendo but he keeps getting himself into these tight-ass scrapes with the judges. That could so easily have gone either way and if it didn’t make you a Gil fan you’re a hard man to please. He really took it to the champ in those first two rounds and showed he was far from outmatched, it’s just a shame he dropped his game later in the fight because I’d love to see these guys go again immediately. That was one of the most fun fights of the year so far and it didn’t even involve anyone getting rocked or really threatened with being finished. Just awesome from both guys.
Add that to The Immortal continuing his Mark Hunt-like underdog charge back from a forgettable win-loss record against Jordan Mein and Josh Thomson’s great scrap with Nate Diaz and we can just pretend Cormier/Mir didn’t happen, right?

This was fun Rob and I think I agreed with pretty much everything except I didn’t consider Kelvin’s victory an upset. Uriah’s finishes in the house were impressive but none of them were against guys who fought him like Kelvin did. Cella was small and lacked power but he pretty much matched Uriah strike for strike in the stand-up for 4:57 until that notorious wheel kick so we knew he could be matched standing. Bubba didn’t last long enough to give us anything else to analyse and Dylan went in with his face still marked up from his previous battles showing he was far short of 100% and fought completely flat. So to me the reason Uriah fought like he did against Kelvin was because he fought a guy who refused to be afraid of him and refused to let him dictate the dynamics of the fight. I think Uriah is very solid but had become over-hyped by Dana and Chael and Kelvin had been consistently under-estimated.
But totally with you on every other aspect of the event, especially the awesome Zingano/Tate fight and the fun but inconsequential-feeling Uriah/Jorgenson fight.
And yeah, I saw Invicta 2, but I haven’t watched all of the last 2 (the ppv events), only the main events, but yeah, the ladies are more consistently ferocious and firey than the men and some of them are showing excellent technique too. It seems like they got the technical hitches worked out this last time, right? The first time they tried ppv I heard tales of torment from people not happy with uStream or whoever it was who was supposed to carry it.

ParticipantI guess my point was that Uriah didn’t live up to the hype, like you said. I just expected him to throw, and he didn’t.
I’ve got more to say, but I’ll save it for my show this week!

ParticipantI just caught up with a couple of the prelims and man Jury/Nijem was a fun first round. Almost 100% grappling with zero strikes. I really liked Stripper Ramsey on TUF so I was hoping he’d pull it out but his striking is way too loose.

Nice one Robby, I like the way you’re doing these. I know we’ve already talked Hall/Gastellum to death but the reason I used the word “over-hyped” for Hall was he’d never actually never fought like this Tasmanian Devil of Destruction I felt like he was being sold as. Against both Cella (who was even with him until the ko) and Dylan (who was far from 100% mentally or physically) he was very measured, and against Bubba he was moving backwards when he hit a guy who was mentally beaten. So when I hear Chael saying he’s already a contender for the 185lb title race I find that wildly premature, and Dana was talking him up like he was this unstoppable force when he had yet to fight someone who could match him for both power and mental commitment.
As for the Belcher-love thing, I think I’ve explained it before as just the fact Belcher is a Carlos Condit/Joe Lauzon type of guy in that his fights almost never go to decision. Unfortuynately he then went on to look horrible against Okami and far from a top level contender, but since 2009 he was 5-1 and that only loss was a controversial split which was Fight of the Night. So before Okami I could confidently say a Belcher fight was never boring and be 100% correct, just like I could with a Joe Lauzon fight. I still like J-Lau better just in terms of personality and he does have an even better non-dec record than Belcher, but in other ways Joe is very similar to Belcher when it comes to consistency of entertainment while not really being a top contender in their division.
And as for the Bendo/Gil thing, I wasn’t saying Gil won, just that Bendo gets in these tight scrapes over and over and it was so close the judges could have chosen Gil and nobody could have complained. Also that for the first two rounds at least Gil was doing to Bendo what nobody had done previously, so for me it was a very interesting and dramatic fight even if nobody ever looked in danger of being finished. Seeing Bendo, a guy who seemed to only have fought smaller opponents, have to come back from two rounds down against a guy who matched him for power and out-reached him was something new while it was happening, even if the final result wasn’t.
Anyway, that’s all I think, I agreed with pretty much everything else you said. I was a little afraid that you might not have anything to say that I hadn’t already heard since I’m such a nerd for this shit too and keep up with news and developments pretty well myself, but you definitely know your shit and do a good job and will probably only get even better at this as you get more comfortable with it. I like your perspective and I love how much of a fan you are of a lot of the same things I am and you definitely make me think. Which hurts, but doctors say it’s good for you so I’m going to keep trying.

April 26, 2013 at 10:56 pm #29007Bucho
ParticipantOh yeah, there was one other thing. I didn’t find the Carmont/Larkin fight as boring as you did, I think because Larkin’s striking was so wildly inventive. He was throwing, and landing, things that made famously creative guys like Anderson, Bones and Pettis look unimaginative. Carmont hit him back with a few spinning dealios of his own too. I mean, I do see why you weren’t enamoured of it and it wasn’t in danger of being Fight of the Night, but for me there was definitely a bunch of stuff there which was fun to see.
And the other other thing about Alan Belcher is that I love muay thai and he’s a total muay thai guy. And he decided to play leg chess with deadly Rousimar “Paul Harris” Palhares, the most feared leg guy in MMA, and won. I love balls (that’ll be on my tombstone) and Alan Belcher has baaaaaaaaalls.

ParticipantI’ll agree with you on the Palhares fight, for sure. It’s just beyond that, I just haven’t been too impressed.
I’m glad that you’re liking the way I’m doing it – I was really considering just doing them off the cuff the week after while I’m driving, but it really helps to be home so I can look up the card again.
Oh, and I hope that you don’t think I remember shit like “so and so’s on a two fight win streak” or whatever. I’m using the wiki page while I’m talking so I can speak intelligently about it. I actually told April the other night that I consume so much MMA news that I really should cover it, but again, my biggest problem is trying to come up with stuff that’s not plastered on a hundred other websites. Maybe I shouldn’t worry about that, and know that just the fact that it’s me with my own unique spin and natural charm that will bring the listeners coming back. Wow, I’m an egotistical prick.
