OMG – so far, this is one of the greatest single nights of fights I’ve ever seen – and there’s four fights left! If you aren’t watching this right now and you’re a fan, you need to find it any way you can and watch this shit.

i’ve had a horrendous last 2 weeks and checking email on my phone is the only internet activity i’ve had; DVR is backed up worse than me during my “all-day cheese buffet of 2005.” i’m really hoping to catch up this weekend.

I’ve enjoyed the fights tonight. Good stuff.

Tate/Rousey – I’m excited about this fight, but I’m glad it’s almost over. I’m tired of the “oh, she’s so pretty” bullshit. Now, I will agree that they’re both built well, but they’re sixes at best. Sure, they’re the best looking women outside of Gina Carano in MMA, but, even Gina’s only like a 7. I don’t typically grade on a curve, and since I could go to the mall and probably see twenty or thirty women better looking than any of these…I mean, am I wrong?

All that being said, Ronda did look pretty nice at the weigh-ins… 🙂

I went off on the Strikeforce commentators on MMAFighting.com. I thought it was pretty funny.

    Quote:
I like Mauro Renallo and all, but he needs to stop using big words. Seriously, it makes him sound like he just reads a thesaurus before he comes out there, the moron that learns a new word and tries to sound intelligent by using them. Just say nose. Nobody ever uses the word “proboscis”. Oh, and they’re called “rounds”, not “stanzas”. That really annoys the hell out of me – as beautiful as MMA can be sometimes, this is not poetry. It seems to be one of those commentator things – trying to make things more important or something. Be natural! That’s what I love about Joe Rogan – he’s just himself.

Pat Miletich – I don’t mind listening to him, but what’s with the duckface? I can’t be the only one to notice that. As soon as he stops talking, he pulls a duckface. Strange.

And Frank Shamrock, ol’ metal mouth. I can’t really say too much bad about him, really. He and Pat seem to really be themselves.

But even if Mauro calmed down with the inappropriately used words, I’d still prefer Joe and Mike Goldberg. Even with Goldberg spouting off ads every three seconds, their flow seems to be a lot better. I like Jon Anik and Kenny Florian, too, even if their voices sound a LITTLE too similar.

But what do I know, I’m just an idiot.

I don’t like when sports callers flower up things either. There’s a Rugby League commentator here who likes to call the halves of a game “stanzas” and it just sounds dopey as fuck. I have to admit I have a soft spot for Mauro because of Pride but for me Rogan and Goldie are on a level above him and everyone else.

As far as Gina or Ronda or Meisha go, I think prettiness is only one aspect of hotness/sexiness. Like you say pretty girls are a dime a dozen, especially in the internet age where we can find thousands of them naked within about 6 and a half seconds. There’s so much blessed feminine facial geometry out there I’m almost bored by it. I want more and so personality comes into it and mental and physical toughness and ability and independence is very attractive so even if these ladies are 6 or 7 on a prettiness scale, they’re 9 or 10 on a hotness/sexiness/I-would-do-anything-to-bone-them scale. And, perhaps unfortunately, it’s an unavoidable conversation point in the fight hype business.

On another topic, have you guys watched any MMA documentaries? I hear about them from time to time but I guess they’re generally very small-time indie docs and I don’t even know what sort of releases they get in the US, let alone in NZ. I know Anderson has one, there’s a new-ish one called Fightville featuring Dustin Porrier that played at SXSW last year. Or there’s that biographical film based on Matt Hammil which isn’t a doc but I’m going to pretend it is. But I feel like I’m going to have to learn to pirate if I ever want to see any of them.

Yes, that was funny. Daniel Tosh is a funny dude.

I thought I’d answered your previous post – no, I’ve never seen any MMA documentaries, other than the little segments on upcoming fights on UFC Insider and Inside MMA. I’d like to see the Anderson one…

Man, I’d love to see Anderson’s one, especially before their rematch. Might not have the same power afterwards, depending on the results.

Also, this reminded me of what you were saying in the last SOS about fighters trash talking.

Speaking of Anderson, I’m sure being champ is nice, but all the media commitments must get to be a drag after a while.

I’ve been pretty quiet on the MMA front lately, but that shit has come to an end.

UFC 145. Get it over with already. I am so sick of hearing Jones And Evans talk about this shit – I’m just ready for it to be over. Don’t get me wrong – I’m excited as hell to see what happens this weekend, but I’m just tired of the arguments. Rashad is an idiot – this whole “teammates don’t fight” bullshit is so stupid. What’d you think would happen? This is business – look at Cerrone and Leonard Garcia – they have both said that if they had to, they’d go in the octagon and try to beat the hell out of each other and then afterwards go have a beer. Rashad, in my opinion, is just a big baby about this. I think he felt threatened by the attention Jones was getting, and saw a time hat he would no longer be the biggest thing at that gym and decided to leave. All ego. I hope Jones ends his career, to be honest. I have never liked Rashad, because he always seemed fake to me – I don’t know if he actually is, but that is how he comes off.

Alistair Overeem. I hate all this PED/TRT shit. Dude tests at 14:1 testosterone level, and normal is 1:1. Nevada allows up to 6:1. What possible explanation is there for this? I think people who use should be banned from fighting period. Not people who get caught – I’m saying people who use. I was sorta on the fence about this until this last week – Joe Rogan was on Inside MMA and made some damn good points. He said if you are using TRT or whatever during training and then getting off of it in time to be tested, you’re still cheating because you put something in your body that gave you an unfair advantage in training. That’s like saying that it’s okay to use as long as you’re not juiced up during the fight. But you still got your body conditioned unfairly – you got bigger, your body recovered more quickly, whatever. Of course, by that rationale, smoking weed to learn jujitsu should also be a banned substance, because it still gives an unfair advantage come fight time, but whatever.

Then you see Brian Stann – can this guy get any cooler? I mean…did you see his fight with Alessio Sakara? Just class act all the way. But he also said that he’s never used any sort of PED or TRT and feels that he would hate to fight someone like that, because every fight takes its toll on your body – if he lost to someone who afterward was found to use, the damage had already been done to his body. At that point, who cares if you get your loss taken off of your record? You could have sustained an injury that could affect you for the rest of your career.

So that’s my thoughts on this – take Rashad out, and as much as I like Overeem, he should be drawn and quartered on live TV and the parts fed to hungry kids in Africa. Wait, what?

Rashad has made himself hard to root for at times but I became more of fan of him when he was coaching on TUF, when Rampage seemed like a selfish dick and Rashad actually gave a shit about the guys he was in charge of. And in a fake-off between him and Bones I see Bones as significantly more fake than Rashad is, so maybe this one is a lesser-of-two-evils deal, but I’m pulling for Rashad. That division needs a shot in the arm and having the belt change hands would do it. Lyoto could and should have done it, but if it has to be Rashad then so be it. Bones is hugely entertaining but his talk-humble-act-like-God’s-gift thing has worn real thin for me.

Brian Stann is the opposite of all that – pure class both inside and outside the cage. I actually found it really moving when he pulled back from hitting Sakara again when the guy was clearly gone. I don’t know if he can ever be champ but he’s easily one of my favourites.

Bummer about Overeem though, that could have been a great fight with JDS. Looks like it might still be too, but it seems like if he does get licensed under some technicality and the fight goes ahead it would hurt the UFC and the sport a lot PR wise. One good thing was seeing the push for Mark Hunt, as unlikely as success was for that movement. It’s insane how popular he still is considering his bad 6-fight slide a couple years a ago but I think a lot of that is that he has a similar charm to Roy Nelson in that he’s not built like Dolph Lundgren but he holds his own in a tough competetion against guys who do look like athletes.

I just don’t understand that – Jones comes off to me as completely likable and humble, and he’s like, super into God. Not to say that it gives him some kind of immunity, but every interview I’ve seen with him just gives me a different impression than the “high on himself” attitude he seems to get painted with. He seems quite the opposite from fake to me. From the moment I first saw Rashad, I thought he was an attention seeking whore. Never liked him.

I’d be curious to know what gives you that impression, for either one.
