For your Imperial Holonet News: http://holonetnews.com/

Rebels finally started showing here so I’ve seen the first 8 eps and I like it. It’s very kiddy, especially the extremely broad, cartoony way Ezra and Zeb are voiced, and ESPECIALLY the way stormtroopers are played as buffoons with ZERO menace, but for what it is it’s solid.

Whatever ingredient that is present in Star Wars that makes people love it so much, I think Rebels has it. I think if you could really identify it, anyone could make something great, but it’s really difficult to pinpoint.

I just hope that JJ has been able to harness it.

They’ve hewn so close to the OT with their underdog-ragtag-crew-on-a-space-action/adventure-while-a-kid-learns-the-ways-of-the-force thing they almost couldn’t miss. It’s certainly light years away from the prequels and the bog of political intrigue and royal trappings they drowned in. The OT may have had a princess but she was in the trenches with her troops. The prequels was Padme flouncing around in a bunch of tedious opulence.

That’s oversimplifying the magic ingredient, but it’s part of it. The LITERALLY awesome music and sound effects help a lot too.

Very cute, except that it gave me epilepsy and shingles and blacklung. I’m getting too old for that fastcut malarkey.

These guys have a good selection of shot from the new teaser. I’ve watched the whole thing about 7 times and the opening shot about 94 times.

I don’t know what the deal is with that chrome stormtrooper (is it just one person, an elite squad, a trick of the light?!?) but it looks pretty fucking badass. Way cooler of a villainous look than Darth Maul, a design I always hated for being way too on the nose.

Also love the X-Wing pilot “Wooooooo HOO!”. You just can’t beat the thrill of a fighter jock saying “Wooooooo HOO!” while hurtling through the skies. I think that’s Oscar Isaac from Inside Llewyn Davis and Drive and other things and I think Oscar Isaac is awesome so I think Oscar Isaac saying “Wooooooo HOO!” is doubly awesome.

    It is.

I’m intrigued by the chrome Trooper, and also prepared to be annoyed by it. Just wait until people line up in their DIY version of that thing and the sun hits it.

The opening shot… I love the sense of scale with the wreckage. Fucking wow.

Yeah, I don’t want to really speculate on what I’m seeing, but holy shit, the main thing I came away with was how much it just really feels like Star Wars. There’s a chance that JJ could piss off the diehard SW fans like he did with the diehard Trek fans, but I just get such a feeling of joy from watching this that it’s hard to feel anything else.

Looks very Nazi Germany in that one shot. Interesting to find out what that’s gonna be.

I wish there was more Luke, but hey, that’s okay. Seeing Han again was just so great (make no mistake, that didn’t look like Harrison Ford from the last twenty or so years, that was motherfuckin’ Han!)

The only bad thing to me really is that seeing all of this makes it really hard to temper my expectations.

Bryan, you need to get your ass back here so we can all see it together.

If you watch it frame-by-frame… you’ll see that I AM there for the release.

The way that music builds through the quick cutting last half of the teaser really works a treat.

I’m sure there’s plenty of speculation around the internet trying to explain why the voiceover says “My father HAS it” instead of HAD it, and I’m sure force ghosts are the obvious explanation but I choose to believe it’s just Luke reading out loud from his diary.

I just assumed it was more about the consistency of the original quote, and with the helmet still being around he thinks of Anikin as returned more than gone, which gives more support to present tense. Add to that the poetic feel that trying to make a new classic film calls for, and I didn’t feel like there was too much to read into it.

Maybe he just still talks to them, or watches porn late at night with dear old dad, a crusty old knight and a moldy midget.

The Luke voiceover is pulled directly from the conversation with Leia in Teddy Bear Land, including the “you have that power too”.
