They definitely should’ve gone with “The Force Rolls Out of Bed and Stretches”.

Continued from Rob’s Mini Show thread — http://www.theswitchedonshow.com/forums/topic/robs-mini-show-20170215/

The crawl for Empire calls Hoth an “ice world”, so that one at least is explicit. But then we also know any planet far enough from its star could be an ice world as long as it has the right atmosphere, so that particular one’s not too weird a “fantasy” idea.

With Tatooine being a “desert planet”, I don’t know. Maybe worth thinking of the very cold deserts we have on Earth, like the desert regions in the Arctic and Antarctica, so maybe if Tatooine is a world in which the atmosphere has a much smaller water content than ours it has those cold deserts at the poles. Or maybe the parts of Tatooine we see are polar regions and the equatorial region is literally melted and/or on fire. Maybe Dagobah also has poles but they’re frozen swamps.

I get where you’re coming from though, I never liked the singular environment thing either. It seems an unnecessarily limited way to conceive of a story’s world/universe and suppresses imagination rather than stoking it.

I still don’t really get where you’re coming from on the female skew though. Didn’t you name all the books from the Disney/Kennedy era and it turned out at least half of them are about dudes? Isn’t the lone cartoon about a dude? Aren’t half of the standalones about dudes (not to mention that the rumoured upcoming projects in this regard involve confirmed dudes Boba Fett and your main man Obi Wan Kenobi)?

I’ve developed a little bit of sympathy for the “Rey is a Mary Sue” thing though, because by definition she kind of is. One of the main parts of that deal is that established, beloved characters love the new character, and this is true of Rey. Grumpy old Han is clearly impressed by her, Leia greets her like a long lost family member (HMMMMMMMMMMM) and Chewie becomes her bff. Even the good old Millennium Falcon seems to love her. The stuff about her unlocking powers and having victories with far less struggle than Luke just feeds into that whole Mary Sue equation. Even if subsequent films explain why she’s so Mary Sue-esque that won’t change the fact she exhibits a whole bunch of Mary Sueness in TFA, and that whole dynamic really serves to dampen the drama for a lot of people.

We like to see our heroes struggle through a loss or two before they have their victories. Luke is saved by Obi Wan when the Sand People wreck his ass, then Obi Wan saves him again in the Mos Eisley Cantina, then he’s rescued from the trash compactor monster when the machinery starts up and scares it off, then in his moment of triumph he gets rescued when Vader is about to blow him out of the sky and Han turns up to take care of Vader and his wingmen. He’s constantly beat to shit and defeated on his way to victory. Meanwhile Rey rescues herself from the dudes who try to steal BB-8, rescues herself and Finn when Jakku is attacked (even has to help Finn out with fancy maneuvers when the Falcon’s gun turret jams), rescues herself from the clutches of Daniel Craig and rescues herself and Finn when Kylo Ren is being all dastardly and stuff. It’s as if the writers were all, “We want a female character, but we can’t have her being rescued by men, or else GalTwitter will wax our asses for having her be a damsel in distress, and that’s just not PC!”.

So Luke takes a bunch of losses on his way to triumph (I think Harry Potter may go through similar trials, as many hero’s journey types do), while Rey gets win after win after win after win with little to no help from anyone else. She’s adorable as hell, but it’s not exactly classic drama.

I just noticed a large trend of female-heavy protagonists. If you look at just the new movies, it’s definitely that way (and let’s be honest, most folks don’t watch the cartoons or read the books). Like I said, I’d only really noticed it when I realized that the Aftermath series had two strong female characters as their leads (didn’t actually realize it until after I’d read the first two books). I just noticed that it seemed like an overcorrection or something. I’ve got no problem with them, seriously – I’ve enjoyed all of these books, so it’s not a huge deal for me.

There you go, bringing Luke into it – but seriously, I hadn’t actually realized it until you pointed out the differences in Luke and Rey’s stories, so I see your point. There needs to be a balance – all of the characters should “save” each other. That’s what made the OT so interesting – Leia needed saving every now and then, but for the most part, she held her own, and they all did their part saving each other from time to time. It really wasn’t until Jedi that Luke came into his own and started saving the others.

All of that being said, however – I didn’t have a problem with Rey being able to fight, being able to fly a ship, being able to fix a ship, knowing shit about how things work on the Falcon, and especially all of the Force shit. With the Force, I thought that it was, you know, starting to “Awaken” in her when she heard the lightsaber calling to her, and then I also assumed that Kylo Ren unlocked something in her head when he started fooling around in there. I think that once the trilogy is complete, it will all make more sense, and I trust them to explain it properly. We just don’t have all the answers yet, and that’s sort of the beauty of it.

And at least it’s something else to differentiate TFA from Episode 4. The similarities are glaring of course, but those differences between her and Luke are too.

ROGUE ONE’s out on home video, have any of you guys watched it again yet? If so you should probably make a podcast about it. If not you should make a podcast about that too.

I should do either, or both. Maybe neither? I’m so confused.

Funny you should say this, Bucho – I recorded a show on Monday about this very thing, I just need to out it out. So, uh…yeah, why don’t I do that.

And I love Bad Lip Reading in general, but this one really had a lot of funny stuff. And the fact that Mark Hamill did the Han voice throughout is pretty cool, too.

Not sure if you guys watched it, but check out the Ep VIII Celebration panel if you want to see Mark Hamill steal the show.

I’ve watched it all. I love this stuff. All of the Carrie Fisher tribute stuff was great as well. The Rebels Season 4 stuff was also awesome, as well as the Battlefront 2 reveal. I have a lot to talk about on my next mini-show.

Yeah, great news if it is true. There have been some conflicting reports, so it’s not 100% going to happen yet. I think it’d be kinda dumb if they didn’t though.
