ParticipantHoly crap I’m pumped for this. Unfortunately, this might be the first Star Wars movie since Return of the Jedi that I don’t see on opening day. We shall see how things go…
But yeah, man, what’s really interesting to me is something I read on the SW Reddit group – that this movie seems to be as close to what A New Hope would be like if we’d gotten it this year instead of ’77. It just seems that they’ve done such a good job of matching the look and feel of ANH, and that’s just really impressive to me.

ParticipantI’ve probably watched more about R1 than I should’ve, but I’m still pumped. The one thing I know right now is that it’s probably going to make me into a slobbering mess. There seems to be, especially in the last few things I’ve watched, a lot of really emotional things to come. There seems to be a lot of heart in this.
The other thing I will say is that I haven’t been a huge fan of Gareth Edwards up to this point (I’ve only seen Godzilla), but all of the interviews he’s done really make me want to root for him. He seems like he genuinely wanted to make the movie that he, as a huge SW fan, wanted to see, and I think at this point, with the generation of movie makers we have now, that’s something that’s really important.

ParticipantYeah, Edwards seems like a good dude and his personal backstory is great too. I haven’t seen either Godzilla or Monsters yet though, so Rogue One will be my first look at his work.
I’m amped as fuck for it too. Hope you find a way to see it as soon as possible.

ParticipantYeah, I keep hearing a lot of people who I’m starting to think are only on the planet to criticize and bring other people down. There’s just so much hate for everything that it’s hard to get any real worthwhile opinions. It’s been fashionable over the last ten years or so to just completely shit on anything that is popular. Then, on the other side, you’ve got quite a few people that do nothing but praise things, so it’s really weird.
I’ve allowed myself to be excited for this one. There’s still a chance that some of it won’t work, of course.
Godzilla was pretty meh. Sound design was awesome, and when there WAS some action, it was pretty kickass, but there was just so little of it. Interesting to see if everything comes together on this.

KeymasterRob left out the part where he has potentially found a way to see this as soon as possible.
I’m ready for my first 2 showings on Day 1 (official, not night before) and Day 2.

ParticipantI’m seeing on the Friday with a gang of my wife’s friends, then Saturday with my bros/nieces/nephews.
I’ve also been listening to between 3-6 hours of various Star Wars podcasts pretty much every day for the last couple of weeks. Some of them are plenty of fun, but none of them are as much fun as listening to you guys talk Star Wars, so my heart swells with excitement and joy and breaks with pestilence and torment at the same time. It’s quite the emotional rollercoaster.

ParticipantYes, opening day will still include Rob, thankfully.
There’s definitely plenty Star Wars to talk about, what with Rebels, the books, Battlefront – for me, it’s been a really fun time to be a Star Wars fan.

ParticipantAnd plenty of Star Wars podcasts to listen to, right Robby?

ParticipantI’ve seen Rogue One twice now and will see it again, so at least draw even with the amount of times I saw TFA on a big screen. On a % scale I’d give Rogue One a solid 85. I guess that’s like 3.5 stars on the Rob 4 star scale.
I thought the world-building and overall story were significantly better than TFA, but there weren’t any characters quite on the level of Rey, Finn and Kylo Ren, so no moments quite as magical as, say, Rey and Finn’s reunion on board Starkiller or the lightsaber in the snow. Hopefully Rian Johnson can combine the strengths of each somehow.
Keen to hear what you chaps thought of it.

ParticipantGot a chance to see R1 this weekend, I think I need to see it at least another time to really put thoughts together properly. That being said I did really enjoyed the movie. I will say the only really memorable characters for me right now I felt was the blind half jedi dude for his badassery and the converted imperial droid for his comedy shtick.

ParticipantThose two definitely stole the show.
I think Jones and Luna did well with what they had to work with, but they just don’t have the natural screen magnetism of other Star Wars leads like Hamill, Fisher, Ridley and Boyega. Jones is probably a better actor than all of them, but doesn’t project that star power kind of magic that makes her instantly memorable.
Like, Finn is actually kind of a terribly written character (for an ex-stormtrooper at least), but Boyega is so insanely charismatic he makes it work far better than it should.

ParticipantOnly 8 hours and 21 minutes left in 2016 and we still don’t have a Rogue One review from any of the Switched ON gentlemen. AND Princess Leia and Artoo died.
Fuck you 2016.
