ParticipantDude, Newman…like, what?! You should totally see it, that is, if you like the “talkies”. That’s what they used to call movies, talkies. So yeah, just do it. It’s fun.

ParticipantI’d even recommend seeing it in 3D if you can. It’s not vital in any respect, but it is the best 3D I’ve seen since Avatar.

ParticipantAlso, has the Captain seen this darn thing yet? I’ve been holding off really getting into stuff here because I only know for sure Robby and Jerry have seen it and I’m only 99.78% sure Bryan has.

ParticipantAnother chat show with Carrie Fisher being fun. Also features Kylie Minogue’s legs.

ParticipantOh, he has seen it. He saw it with me in that opening night travesty. I say travesty because the mix was indeed faulty, and the movie was not as enjoyable as it could’ve been. I saw it again last night, the mix was perfect, and I enjoyed it immensely. I still need time to figure out where it ranks in the hierarchy, since that seems to be the best way for everyone to gauge things. Right now, it’s definitely more enjoyable than the prequels, and sits comfortably behind the originals. From pure watchability though, it may be in the top two. It’s just so fun.

ParticipantSounds like you and I feel almost the exact same way about it Robby. I go back and forth whether it’s more well-made than Return of the Jedi, but ultimately I think it’s just below, in fourth place. Probably going to see it a third time today.
You should definitely record a Rob’s MiniShow on it though. More than one. You always say it helps you sort out your thoughts just to speak them out loud. Go on. Do eet. Do eet naaooow.

ParticipantBryan should too. I FB messaged Jerry to record also, but with him you don’t get timely podcasts, he dumps 25 at a time recorded over the course of 14 months. That’s just how he rolls.

ParticipantYeah, I want to do one, but with April being around, it’s hard to get one done. Hopefully this week though.

ParticipantWell hell, we can just skype and talk about it if you’re keen. Been ages since we did that anyway, let me know if you have any time over the next couple of days. Talk some SW, some UFC, some how the hell have you coped with the barrage of Christmas food now that your body copes different with barrages of food.

ParticipantWell, I feel like a total ninny muggin for not seeing this. Been busy with the fam. But to make up for it, how about that mini-show? Just FYI, I feel like I just scratched the surface with that topic.

ParticipantI agree with pretty much everything you say here Robby. Even the bit about Alien being better than Aliens.
It’s kind of hard to say exactly how it both feels like Star Wars and doesn’t feel like Star Wars, but the closest I’ve seen to nailing it for me is it has the feel of a suuuuuuuuper well-produced fan film.

ParticipantSo we all agree Rey is Luke’s kid right?

KeymasterSorry I haven’t been on here at all for this discussion, when I took time off for the holidays I really took time off. I didn’t even get on a computer much at all.
I agree that it’s possible she is, but I really hope she’s not. I hope we get something better than that, and that the ghosts of Yoda, Anikin and Obi-Wan said hey, “you can’t get married of fuck anyone… what kind of example would that set for others? Do you really want to be like your dad, Darth Emphysema over there?” It just seems like it’s still just as forbidden as before, even if there isn’t a Jedi temple and all of that stuff. But maybe we will have this backstory where he struggled with the finer points of the dark vs the light without anyone on the full-time job of training him. Previous Jedi were trained for life after all, not just Spring Break like Luke was.
The fact that Rey was guided to the lightsaber strongly suggests that she is his kid, or it’s something like that but… Ben (Kylo) was young when he turned to the darkside, but we don’t know for sure how young. Why would she have been in hiding when he was young? Unless he thinks he killed her (a very young youngling) when he turned and destroyed everything Luke had built. This is what I suspect will be the story, but I really don’t want it to be. Sometimes the poetry of the SW saga doesn’t work as well for me, and I’m worried that Ben/Kylo killing all of the Jedi like Anikin is already enough, but to add to that a hidden baby strong with the force, with a concealed dad and blah blah blah. I’ll tell you, audiences are already guessing it, so it won’t have a big reveal anyway so the surprise element is out.
Also, if you lived in the SW universe, you are fucking retarded to fall for that shit again, knowing that’s how your damn uncle and mom managed to not die at the hands of your pawpaw and dirty uncle Palpy. But my point with him turning is that he was old enough and trained will enough that turning to the dark side was effective. That tells me he’d be old enough to know he had a cousin, his force powers around working with the minds of others is the strongest we’ve seen so far, so it’s unlikely Luke learned some new trick to conceal (like Palpy did) so how would Kylo not know? It only works if he knows about her and thinks she’s dead, and now we are back to the weak poetry point. Also, with all of those force brain powers of his… how would he not know when he was digging around her grey matter? Oh yeah, I was getting back to my point… Ben/Kylo claimed the saber belonged to HIM. If a force-strong infant existed in Luke’s lineage, why would Ben/Kylo think it belongs to him? It was Anikin’s, not Vader’s so why would it be important to him? It’s only important if it was promised to him I’m thinking. Now, playing devils advocate, what if he had this strong bond with Luke, was promised these things and a baby was born that took all of the attention away from Ben? Now, we are getting to some similarities I can stand. I might even be able to put up with Rey Skywalker as a thing. Now we have the jealousy thing driving Ben crazy, add to that the fact that Luke is not a life long Jedi with the patience and knowledge to instruct all of these pupils and you get a whiny brat of a kid that’s really too much like his pawpaw. This would give some strong support to his tantrums we see in TFA… and I’d like it done that way.
But at a superficial level, I’m hoping that Rey is something else… someone else. But I don’t know that there is a believable story out there to make anything but Rey Skywalker work. So, play me a tune about Ben the jealous nephew that is no longer the apple of Luke’s eye, and the winner of Luke’s lap/throne and this jealousy and demand to know more, be more, have more is what pushed him to the dark side, and I’ll bite. Hell, I may even climb on board with a big bucket of lube.

That all pretty much nails it for me. Add that he felt being sent away meant his parents didn’t love him enough and it sets up a common theme for Ben feeling something lacking in the relationships with his parents and uncle, and Snoke coming along to meet that need for him.
And I’ve always disliked the “poetry” aspect too. You create this huge, rich universe just to tell the same story over and over? Seems like a waste of massive potential to me.

ParticipantHere’s another one: Why do Leia and Chewie blank each other on the tarmac after Chewie offloads Finn to the medical team and starts to lope away from the Falcon? They pass within 2 yards of each other and neither appears to even acknowledge the other’s existence let alone commiserate. These two who loved Han Solo more than anyone else in the galaxy and who have shown affection towards each other earlier in this film when Chewie barges into the middle of a Han and Leia moment to embrace Leia.
Probably the bummest bum note in the film for me.
