I would suggest if you have every installed hardware before (such as ram) to get the stock amount (probably 2 gigs) and buy ram sticks somewhere else and install them yourself. This can typically save anywhere in the range of $50-$100.

There are plenty of sites out there with step-by-step video/picture guides.

That’s the case with any computer in my opinion. the Mini is tougher to do the RAM install, as it’s not considered a user-upgradeable item (and technically voids your warranty if they care), but if you have a 5 in 1 scraper, you are good to go.

Crucial is the best place to buy RAM for Apple machine in my opinion. Perfect compatibility, and great pricing.

any of you guys remember all the problems with upgrading RAM back in the day? not only was it prohibitively expensive for decent sticks (anyone remember memory banks with individual IC chips) but you had to worry about parity and clock cycles? and praying the system would see ALL the available memory? man, i do not miss that at all.

Who says it’s really gone? Some of that still happens. Some computers, if you put “backward compatible” RAM in there, just crap out. I’ve even seen it on Apple with quality RAM. Not as much recently, it’s improved, but I’m just saying.

yeah, you’re right. there’s still a bit of plug-n-pray involved. but i certainly don’t dread having to do it. at least not like i used to.

Yeah, thanks Newman I have done RAM and drives before, but only on older machines and the warranty issue is something I take pretty seriously (it’s saved me $$$ over the years on all repairs with kinds of gear). It’s another one of those things that’s like, “save me $80 now but maybe cost me $250 down the road, or worse.” I’d play it safe with that stuff, even given the Mac’s rep for being super-solid. It’s all good advice worth considering though.
