Rumor’s been shot down, but it wouldn’t surprise me to see that happen sometime in the near future.

It’s been shot down as being a fact, however based on who is refuting the rumor, I wouldn’t doubt this to be the path they are headed down, but as for it being official, that remains to be seen.

Sure Paramount was denying a switch, but the fact is they have a way out now, and it’s a matter of ‘when’ they will take it not ‘if’. Speaking of a way out, HD-DVDs other backer it seems has one two. Interesting article, the analysts contributing this may have it right that both studios will concede defeat together, and decide that Toshiba’s technology is just dead.

I think it was all a matter of time before one media won out over the other. Basically, it’s this decade’s VHS vs. BetaMax. One might be better than the other, but once everyone jumps on board one, the other will slowly die. Right now, it looks like the smart money’s going to be on Blu-Ray. Personally, with as much money as I’ve plunked down over the years on standard DVDs, I’m perfectly willing to wait this one out to see who the winner’s going to be before I go gung-ho and with one or the other.

I have to weigh in on this again (I know I’m a big fatty) because I’m probably one of the few dumb enough to buy both. The truth is, spec for spec, Blu-Ray has always had the advantage, and as an owner of both, I can see the difference, but keep in mind that it’s probably due to the elegance of the PS3. You might disagree with that by itself, but Sony really has out Microsoft’ed Microsoft, with the exception of Microsoft holding their stranglehold on online gaming. But, the minute you turn on the PS3, it just looks more refined, more thought-out, so the Blu-Ray experience has always been a better one for me than the Xbox 360 w/HD-DVD add-on.

That being said — with the new 120 hz Samsung LCD TVs that are out (see here), it’s hard to see the difference between DVD and any Blu-Ray or HD-DVD disc. The motion is so clear — it bridges the gap. On my 3 year old rear-projection TV, the difference between DVD and BR and HD is a lot higher. So what I’m really trying to say is the better the TV, the less Blu-Ray or HD-DVD seems to matter. Now there definitely is a difference, but is it worth someone buying their movies over again? It is if your TV isn’t one of those.

Now, according to Bill over at thedigitalbits, the defection will probably happen in the next two months, because all of these guys are in bed together, meaning Paramount and Universal probably have deals with Toshiba and LG and any other manufacturer. The one thing they’re trying to avoid at this point is all of these people who have bought HD-DVD players in the last month to rush to return it. The smart ones already have. If you have bought into HD-DVD, and you still have the ability to return it, I would suggest you return them NOW. Get a Blu-Ray player, get you some movies, and wait for the rest to come over.

So yeah, Frank — you and everyone else that haven’t come into it yet, just wait for the dust to clear, and you’ll be good.
