ParticipantThere’s a theory I have about talking to strangers – if they look as if they hadn’t showered in a few days, I don’t attempt to start up a conversation.
And yes, I finished on Saturday night. Started at about 1 am and finished at about 10:30 pm. I had told April not to expect much from me on that day.

ParticipantI pretty much make that a standing rule in my marriage.

And for those of you wondering what to read next, may I suggest Discworld?

ParticipantThe books that have Rincewind in are funny, especially Eric.
If it doesn’t work, jam a screwdriver in there and jiggle it about.

ParticipantI do like Rincewind, but I also like where he takes the series after.

ParticipantThe wizards in discworld are funny but the real magic is in the stories of the Watch. Vimes is just so fucking cool, the perfect everyman elevated to reluctant hero character through hardened but wry old-style cop values, and the other characters surrounding him are so perfect, it’s no wonder Terry Pratchett was the top UK fiction author before Rowling started pumping out the Potter.
I mean, if an HP fan wanted more stories with spells and broomsticks, but with humor, the Unseen University would be a sweet starting point but the Watch stories have more of the depth, badassness and humour of some kind of Sopranos/Grosse Pointe Blank/Kung Fu Hustle/JFK/Hitchhiker’s Guide/Bourne Identity/Willow/Dirty Harry/Blade/Fifth Element/Terminator concoction. Werewolf cops, reformed-vampire lawyers, a guild of assassins, a devilishly intelligent Patrician, dwarves, golems, Death himself … shit, I sound like I’m selling the stuff. Start with Guards! Guards! and move it on up. Pratchett also has great stories not revolving around the watch though, Going Postal kicked ass and Thief Of Time is awesome too, with the history monks and time travel theory stuff.
Old Tel has been writing more for kids and young teenagers lately with those Wee Free Men stories so hopefully he comes back to Vimes and Co someday soon. Just like the film world needs writers who can weave multi-layered tales, so does the book world and Terry’s the man in that regard.
Rallying cry/rant over.

ParticipantOne thing I should add about Terry Pratchett is that he writes so, so well that reading him is like watching a movie. I’ve never read someone that had such a great command of the English language. When he wants to be serious and deep, he is, and when he wants to be really funny, he is. Often he’ll write a sentence that’s funny on three different levels… the obvious meaning, the hidden meaning, and the hidden hidden meaning.
I’ve always thought there were some interesting parallels between Unseen University and Hogwarts. Of course, Discworld was out before Harry Potter was.
The Watch is really awesome, but I have a hard time choosing a favorite. “Surely Bjorn Stronginthearm is my uncle.” Whether it’s the Watch, Tepic, or The Band With Rocks In, I like them all.

ParticipantAnd who would have guessed that so many baked products can be used as a weapon.
It’s something that Bloody Stupid Johnson did’nt design. 😀

ParticipantHere you go Bucho, from your part of the world (close to it).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5oCFqTxoWyIThe running drags on a bit in the second part, and Rincewind isn’t quite that much of a coward, but I had some good chuckles at the part with the amazons and the “woodsmen”, and I like the interaction with Terry Pratchett at the very end.

ParticipantThanks dude, that’s pretty fun. It does drag a little in places but I loved the part where he says, “… there’s one there,” and they all turn to look at the tree like it’s something extraordinary in the forrest. That “woodsman” was great too but it seems like they found the worst actress in Australia to play the amazon chick.

ParticipantI recently ordered the first two Wee Free Men books, which actually are still supposed to be Discworld books. Sony Pictures and Sam Raimi are working on a Wee Free Men movie.

ParticipantThat’ll be cool if it comes off, I guess there’s big Hollywood bucks around for such projects in the wake of LOTR, Narnia and Harry Potter all making gigantoid box office. I only read the first Wee Free Men book, they seem more aimed at younger readers than the Ankh Morpork novels and I didn’t dig it as much. More Spy Kids than Fight Club if you will, still fun but not really stimulating.
