ParticipantYeah it is pretty expensive. I’m actually more of a computer gamer than anything else. If you want to see some truly impressive graphics, dig up some pics of Crysis from E3. The graphics on that game are better than the PS3 or any of the other consoles.

ParticipantNewman wrote:One think that Nintendo has figgured out is that 99% of people already have dvd players and dont need a console version that ups the price 3 fold. But Newman, the reasoning behind sony and microsoft making their cosoles able to play DVD’s, is that they want their console to be your entire entertainment system all in one, and therefore cutting down on all those unsightly boxes under your tv set. So, in my case, instead of having a Video Player, DVD player, DVD recorder and CD player, all cluttering up my living room, for example if I was to get an Xbox 360, I would just have the TV and ONE box beneath it, altoghether making the whole area, or even the whole room apearing more modern and clutter free. So paying a bit of extra money doesn’t really seem too bad now does it?

ParticipantBut most people already have a DVD player, CD player, Video player, and probably a DVD burner in their PC. So for someone like me making me pay extra for something I dont need and already have isnt a good idea.

ParticipantNot to mention, Newman, that those of us with an HDTV will see the addition of HD-DVD or Blu-Ray as a selling point. Considering that the only HD-DVD player out right now is $499, a $399 Xbox 360 with a $199 HD-DVD add-on or a $599 PS3 really is a bargain if you look at it that way. I don’t use my game systems as DVD players now, and I never intend to, but this is really a different story.
The problem is that with the fight between Toshiba and Sony (HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray), it’s really hard to declare a winner yet. It reminds a lot of people of VHS vs. Betamax, where Sony basically got spanked. The difference here is that (hopefully) most people are a little more aware of what’s going on, and they’ll look at price AND capability. HD-DVD is out now, and it’s buggy as shit. Blu-Ray won’t be out for a while, so there’s no telling what it’s gonna be like, but just looking at the specs, Blu-Ray kills HD-DVD almost across the board (except for price). And many have said, “Is it even time yet for another go at the home market when DVD is so kicking ass right now?”
I’ve seen HD-DVD, and I have to tell you, just looking at the screen (which many of you won’t care what the specs are, as long as it looks good), it is quite an improvement over standard definition DVD (1080p HD, 480p SD), but not enough an improvement as of yet to warrant the price. And still, there’s only like, what, 15 titles available, and most of them shite?
Okay, whoa, sorry. HD rant. Sorry. Back to your regularly scheduled rants…

ParticipantAlso, a DVD can hold more information than a mini-DVD. Therefore, the games can be bigger and have more content.

ParticipantDo they use single or dual layer DVDs for games?
May 12, 2006 at 4:42 pm #21264djohnson
ParticipantTo answer Newman’s question, the XBox games are some of each; single layer and dual layer dvds. It depends on the game. I don’t know about the new consoles…
Rob, the thing I think you are forgetting (or maby not aware of) about the whole HD-DVD/Blu-Ray debacle is that those of us with current generation HD sets are going to miss out. both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray are designed to have end-to-end copy protection. This means copy protection from the disk all the way to the picture coming out of your TV. If you don’t have the new generation HD set (of which there are scant few right now), your expensive new HD-DVD (or Blu-Ray) movie will be downsampled to the standard 720p of a normal progressive-scan disk/player.
So don’t forget to factor in the cost of a new TV when you’re pricing out all this great new technology! ๐
Those bastards at the MPAA need to get what’s coming to them!

ParticipantI am aware of the HDMI interfaces, but according to the Digital Bits, the new Toshiba HD-DVD player can connect to a DVI-to-HDMI interface with no loss of quality, and most HDTVs have DVI, so I didn’t bring it up. Apparently somebody finally came to their senses on that one.

ParticipantDRM is bad. Very bad. As in not good. At all.
May 12, 2006 at 8:08 pm #21283YouFollowMe
ParticipantYeah, DRM is why I keep a sawed-off shotgun under my car seat. You know, in case of attack.
May 12, 2006 at 8:31 pm #21254rob
ParticipantBetter watch out, now. That DRM’ll getcha.
It looks like it could strike at any moment.

ParticipantThe Wii is going to win me over with its controller. I mean its going to be cheaper and more innovative that anything out on PS3 or 360. Now with that being said it’s going to be awhile before i get my PS3 due to its price and the fact that I can’t even get a 360 makes that descison for me. Overall I am very excited about all 3 and eventually i will own them all I’m sure. So instead of dissing this or that, lets talk about what we’re excited about.
May 12, 2006 at 9:58 pm #21267Pa-ul
ParticipantWhat I would like to do, with these three new consoles that is, is get all three in one place and have a good thrash with all three. Reports are that the Wii is much more fun to use than the 360, due to it’s innovative controller.
If it doesnโt work, jam a screwdriver in there and jiggle it about.
