KeymasterI think Studio execs wanted to merchandise further… the action figures are already available, how do they boost sales? The WRONG things drive movie-making these days. The US Economy tried driving growth and trade with something that should support it and look at where they got us. Bad thinking is universal.

ParticipantIn a move that would make Robby proud I still haven’t seen Transformers 2 and with reviews that shitty there’s no way I’m paying to see it.
GI Joe on the other hand, in a real turn up for the books, is getting some very nice props. It’s like we’re living in opposite world compared to what I expected. It’s out on the 7th so folks can make their own minds up but according to Devin Faraci at CHUD it gets a lot of things right, well choreographed action and fight scenes that hit hard (decapitations anyone?), decent acting talent (even though not much is required) and a nice tone in terms of capturing what made Joe cool for kids and balancing the involvement of each character with the others. The only negative he calls out is the shit CGI, which we already suspected from the trailer, but if everything else is so well handled that could be easy enough to look past.
His last paragraph summary – Is GI Joe: Rise of Cobra the kind of silly fun you’ll like? The litmus test, I think, comes when Duke and Ripcord, two new GI Joe recruits, are introduced to the team’s secret underground lair, The Pit. As they take an elevator down through the many, many levels of the facility, all sorts of ‘daily life for GI Joe’ scenes take place, ranging from guys rappelling randomly into the shot, explosions going off to a giant firing range lake (and the glass encased sub facility beneath it). This scene feels like panels from the Larry Hama GI Joe comic come to life (very literally, as this sequence also appeared in the comic), but it’s so silly and so over the top and so much about what a 9 year old might think would be in the cool underground base of a group like GI Joe that it sums up the entire movie.
If I was 10 years old, GI Joe would be one of the best movies I had ever seen. As a grown up it’s one of the better summer movies; a delightfully light, fun and action-packed kick in the ass.

KeymasterYeah, I’ve really not been looking forward to this thread coming back up, because I said it would be totally opposite too. I also said I’d grow up to become known as “Kung-Fu Dick Face” so what the hell do I know?

ParticipantI have the perfect solution – never grow up.
Actually I’m just glad at least one of them looks like it’s going to be pretty good fun, I’d rather be wrong that way than have them both suck.

KeymasterWell, at least the GI Joe movie has spawned some decent humor…

ParticipantRob, I’m here to let you know that Transformers did, indeed, suck ass. It’s deterred me from seeing the second one, which I’ve determined (partly friends’ opinions, partly my expectations from Michael Bay, partly what the first one did to me) is probably also shit. Of course I’ll never know until I see it, but if I’m going to the theater, I’d rather see something like Harry Potter, or…whatever else was out a couple weeks ago.

ParticipantYeah, I’ll just wait for the Bluray. Yeah, I’ll watch it, but I’m not gonna spend any money on it.

I hear you boy, I was eyeing up The Proposal myself. That Ryan Reynolds has a great ass.
