KeymasterWe got the 360 for Derryk (my 13yo) in May, ad I’ve played it a handful of time. Gears of War is the only thing that has made me really sit there, but it’s a kick ass system anyway. I can just never really make time to play.
Congrats on getting on Rob.

ParticipantWell, I’m not on Live yet. It was hard enough to justify the system. How much is one of them there wireless doo-dads?

Plug it into the internet just once. It will update the console automatically (and for free). It only takes a minute and the updates add new functions and of course “fix shit wrong”. The Xbox Live memberships are ‘gold’ and ‘silver’. Silver is absolutely free. You basically register your gamertag from a local console oney to the Live service. You might already know this shit from the original Xbox, but it was new to me when I got my 360, because I didn’t do the Live thing with the first Xbox. On the 360 though, you’re missing out on a large chunk of the experience by not having it hooked up to the internet. The main differences between the Silver and Gold is:
With Silver, you have complete access to the marketplace both premium purchase content (Arcade games, movies, TV shows, blah blah) and free shit (trailers, game videos, arcade game trials, game demos, blahbeebloo).
You can voice chat with anyone at anytime. You can send and receive text and 15 second voice messages.
With the Gold, you can do all of the above, plus video chat with the Xbox Vision Camera (which works very well), you can send a snapshot along with messages, you need Gold to play any multiplayer. Oh, and sometimes they hold shit like demos and such from Silver members for a week or so to make the Gold members feel a little more special.
The Gold membership is about 50/60 dollars a year. Monthly it’s something like 7 bucks. They have cards at places like Best Buy or you can use a credit or debit card to purchase over the console.
The wireless network adapter is about 99 bucks. I being someone who coughed up the bread for one, can say that I’ve never had an incident with mine. It’s worked fantastic. If you’ve got a Media Center 2005 or Vista machine and you want to use the 360 as a Media Extender, they advise you to get a newer Wireless A+G router. If you’re like me, and don’t have anything other than your computer and the Xbox hooked up to a G+B, it’s a bunch of hooey, and you’ll have plenty of bandwidth to watch video without a skip.

ParticipantAll that sounds great, there, Scatt, except for that it costs MORE money. With us trying to buy a house, it was hard enough to get the wife to buy into the console by itself.

But yeah, dragging it into the other room and sticking an ethernet cable into it to update the firmware (or whatever it’s referred to as) would be worth the time. I’ll shut up now. Don’t be sore at me! You’re being very hurtful to me! And I think a little piece of the bone is sticking out, but I’m sitting up and smoking and watching television. Beautiful. Thank you?

ParticipantNo harm intended, there, Scatt. That’s a good idea — doin’ the whole hook it up to do the update thing.
I’ll tell you this — it’s really weird playing a video game with the wife. She’s really diggin’ it! Hopefully I can get her to play some Halo 2 pretty soon, and who knows, if she likes it, maybe the Xbox Live thing will happen sooner rather than later!

ParticipantHave you thrown Halo 2 in the system to see if it’s working? If it isn’t, then you actually have to plug it in for the backwards compatibility update. The problem with those is, they update about 15 or 20 of them at a time a couple times a year, but I’m not sure if it’s ‘one and done’, or if you update them one at a time as you put them in the console… Not sure, but check HERE for the current list of compatible games. Halo and Halo 2 are definitely on there. They haven’t updated them since August, the bastards. They always insist that they have an elite group of emulation ninjas on the case twenty-four/seven with the supreme goal of complete backwards compatibility for all original titles. Oh, if Halo 2 IS working… I typed a lot, that’s all.
Make sure to let your wife know that to balance your hard work, you need some hard play, too (not that kind). You need the Yin as well as the Yang. If it turns out that she isn’t as into it as it seems, then say, “Fine, this is for me, now you go find your own yang”.
