ParticipantI don’t know how much TV you guys watch but how would you say your viewing habits break down percentage-wise between the six genres of comedy, action/drama, sport, news, reality and documentary? I count movies as a separate thing than made-for-TV stuff.
I don’t know where you draw the line between reality and documentary (things like Man Vs Wild might straddle the line somewhat) but lives don’t depend on this sucker, only discussion, so feel free to be liberal with interpretations, lubrications and ejaculations. Speaking of which, I also consider porn a separate category but I’m open to arguments that it isn’t.

Participant55-60% Food Network, 10-15% UFC, 5% Lost, 7% SNL, and the rest is split between poker tournaments, movie channels, documentaries and other shit. Watch quite a lot of football (pigskin, not round white speckly ball) when it’s on, and become almost exclusively tennis during the three-four weeks out of the year during the tournaments.
Of course, if April’s in the living room, it’s cop drama shit.

Participanti watch a lot of movies. my viewing is 80% movies 10% audio/video podcasts and 10% TV. and of that, i’d say that 95% of all the TV i watch is because of my wife. i mostly watch TV as a result of just hanging out with her. if it wasn’t for her i probably wouldn’t watch much TV. most of the TV i watch by myself (other than those few shows i will mention) is when i don’t feel like deciding what to watch when i’m on the computer so i’ll just browse the guide real quick and see if any of my “usuals” are on. “usuals” being those shows that are perfect for background noise. you don’t have to pay attention and can always figure out what’s going on.
100% watch
• anything UFC/WEC (free TV or pay-per-view)
• big bang theory (funniest and most pure geek show i’ve ever seen)
• survivor
• smallville
• when it was on, the new battlestar galactica1/2 watch while on computer
• ninja warrior
• andy griffith
• science/discovery shows (fishing and trucking in the arctic, those logging shows)
• military channel
• food networkwatch with wife
• judge shows
• a lot of prime time procedural shows (csi miami, castle, bones)i just don’t watch a lot of plain old TV. if i want to watch something, my first and strongest impulse is to watch something on dvd/blu-ray. some people unwind with a good book. some people collect bottles. i collect movies. from casablanca or north by northwest all the way to troll 2 i find them very relaxing and enjoyable. except for requiem for a dream, that movie is flat out depressing. 🙂

ParticipantHoly cow Rob, you weren’t joking when you said that Food Network done sunk its claws in yer reeeal good. You watch nowhere near as much comedy as I do too. 30 Rock, Futurama repeats, Modern Family, the odd Letterman show and Jonathan Ross make up a good 50% of my roster. Those 22 minute shots are just so conveniently bite sized.
After that it’s about 10% sport, 20% doco (like Iconoclasts, Dogfights, Wildlife shows, Survivorman), 17% news and 3% music videos. I should watch more movies like you Lark but I usually end up only seeing a couple a week, almost always on weekends.
In June and July, when The World Cup’s on, it’ll be about 90% sport, but apart from that four yearly footballing megacircus of entertainment I really don’t spend a whole lot of time watching sport lately. I used to see every NRL game of my local Rugby League team and watch the MMA, F1 and sometimes Indy Cars (Scott Dixon used to give my little brother a ride to school), but I’ve slacked right off in the last couple of years.
If I was still living with my brother instead of my girlfriend I’d probably have Modern Family switched with Robot Chicken or Souht Park, but I think I’ve always gravitated far more to comedy than drama. I was right into The Sopranos for a while, until the last season at least I think, but the last non-comedy I really cared about was Firefly and that was half a decade ago. Battlestar Galactica didn’t grab me, Lost lost me at the end of season 2, Californication seemed like good actors sagging under bad writing, and I can’t think of another show I’ve even cared enough to try watching more than once. I do still have to see The Wire though, I’ve been hearing the hype for that show for too long to ignore it, and apparently Spartacus is some over-the-top tits-out scandalous fun.
And there is The Pacific, which I know isn’t loved by everyone so far, but I’m digging it. Even though we live in the future in NZ we’re a couple of episodes behind you yanks, so I’ve only seen three of them. But it is definitely growing on me pretty nicely so far.
