Version3
KeymasterGot in Intel Mac, but still need to run Windows stuff? There’s bootcamp right? What if rebooting sucks though? Anyone tried Parallel Desktop? Have you heard of ‘virtualization’? Basically, it’s on chip support for software to completely virtualize a machine at the hardware level, unlike VirtualPC That does this via emulation software. So, that means that Parallel Desktop, allows a VM to talk almost directly to the hardware, in effect running your host OS (Mac OSX in my case) side-by-side with your guest OS (XP in my case).
Reads like an ad right? Well, if you’ve messed with VMs, you know you can decide how much RAM they get, what devices they can use and son on. But I’ve used this a few times in the last couple of days, and it actually runs like a decent off the shelf Dell, WHILE I’m working in OSX. I was able to record (yes record directly to the guest OS) and edit audio in Sound Forge with Parallel desktop. But maybe that doesn’t impress you.
Stats:
Host machine: 17″ MacBookPro 2.13GHz Core Duo 2GB of RAM
Host OS: OSX Tiger
Guest OS: XP Pro SP1
Guest OS RAM: 512MBSo, I’ve been working on a model issue that Jerry and I were having with a work project, and on my guest OS I installed 3DMax 8. Yep, it runs in a VM. But that’s not what’s cool. I installed VRay as well. But that is not what is cool. I was doing a render, while I did this screen cap, resized it with good performance in OSX hosted Photoshop CS2 and posted this… and the render speed is not bad at all. It’s a really detailed image, and I’m rendering it with all light, all textures and all shadows. This is no feeble little image, this thing is kick ass. I’m rendering it while I work in my host OS in Dreamweaver, and PHotoshop, and the total estimated time for this 800×600 image is about 25 minutes.
McFucking wow! Parallel Desktop, and virtualization are super fucking kick ass. But then, so is my Mac. 😀

KeymasterActual render time 21:26. That’s impressive for this model running in a VM. I’d love to see how fast I can render this bitch in a Native OSX application. 😀
Here is the finished render at native resolution (that it was rendered at). Next time, I think I’ll kill all other applications, kick the RAM up really high and render this thing at like 4K x 3K. 😀

KeymasterYou should see how messy that desktop is behind those Windows. This is just from the short week’s chaos. It will be cleaned up and organized by the end of the day today, ready to fuck it all up again next week.

ParticipantPersonally I cant stand an unorginized desktop, thats why about ever 30-40 minutes I’ll move everything on my work machihe’s desktop around a bit. You should see my insane directory structure at home…if you were lost in there, you’d be dead.

ParticipantRob: “Okay let’s see, Newman said to take a right at the font folder and then left at the temporary internet files”
Jerry: “This map says we are two subdirectories below the WoW folder”
Bryan: “So do we go towards the C: or away from it.”
Rob: “Hey guys look at what I found!”
Bryan: “EWW!”
Jerry : “I never knew Newman was into goat-porn”
Rob: “Beats these naked pics of Newman on a motorcycle I found in this folder called “My Taxes””
Bryan: “I’ll take those”hahaha
