ParticipantCENTURION (2010)
For a film about lost members of a decimated legion getting all tore up by Brit barbarians this has a kind of low key energy to it. Maybe it’s the blue/grey saturated palate and maybe it’s just good old dreary Britishness. Solid Michael Fassbender-lead cast directed by good old Neil Marshall.

ParticipantIts subdued-ness left me with a big meh on that one. Beautifully shot, though.

ParticipantTOP GUN (1986)
Bless you Tony Scott, wherever you are now. Bless you very much.

ParticipantClassic. I’ve always loved that shot, and I’ve always thought that the F-14 is one of the meanest looking planes the U.S. has ever had.
Movie seems kinda gay now, though.

ParticipantI don’t think anything matches Jaws and Star Wars as the defining blockbusters but Top Gun is right there in that second tier of “important” moments in blockbustery history with your The Dark Knights and your The Matrixi. Arguably the orange and teal palette favoured by 93% of modern blockbusters can be traced all the way back to Top Gun. Plus Top Gun invented Tom Cruise. And it’s not just now that it seems kinda gay, Tony Scott did all that men’s underpants commercial vibe stuff utterly purposefully. Not only is it not subtext, it’s supertext.
And fuck yeah F-14s are a stupendous piece of machine art.

KeymasterI just like that there is a plural specific to the movie series; the Matrix. I’m going to find a way to use that in a sentence.

ParticipantGoofy pretendy pluralising is what I get from listening to too much Adam Carolla.

ParticipantLOST IN TRANSLATION (2003)
Because, sure, I like the film ok, but really just because I love Bill and often just looking at his near-expressionless expressions cracks me up.

ParticipantIt’s not a bad movie. Don’t really remember a lot of it, except I remember it being extremely violent.

ParticipantNORTH BY NORTHWEST (1959)
Another classic I was lucky enough to see in a proper movie theatre fairly recently. More than 60 years since it was made the thriller elements don’t hold up as well as they once did but, maybe surprisingly, the humour is still a lot of fun. And as with a lot of those older films the cinematography is aces.

ParticipantI think NXNW is okay, but for me, it’s Rear Window. That one is just masterful.

ParticipantTHE PRINCESS BRIDE (1987)
I don’t think of niftily composed frames when I think of this movie, but this one is pretty spectacular.
I miss Andre The Giant.

ParticipantIN BRUGES (2008)
One of the best and blackest comedies. Bruges is a pretty old town with a ton of character and there are plenty of shots I could have posted showing that, and maybe one day I will, but even pretty old Bruges doesn’t have the character of Colin Farrell’s magical eyebrows.
