ParticipantTHE AFRICAN QUEEN (1951)
My favourite thing about this movie is Bogey not being his usual coolness and instead being a goofball, but I also love the way Katherine Hepburn plays against and with him and I also love movies set in the tropics and movies featuring somewhat rickety vessels (I include the Millenium Falcon in this last category).

I get this sneaky idea that you’re saying you went down on my mom or something.

ParticipantI’m not saying I didn’t.

ParticipantJAWS (1975)
Speaking of somewhat rickety vessels, my favourite movie for years has been Jaws. I watched it again recently with my wife because she hadn’t seen it for decades and while I don’t think it’s completely without a flaw or two it’s still a freakin’ masterful bit of business. I’m mostly staying away from predictable/obvious/iconic frames in this thread, because we’ve seen them a billion times in a billion places and will see them a billion more, so I chose this one which is awesome but not often “quoted” where Jaws images are found.

ParticipantYeah, I think it has to be in my top five, for sure. I always loved that shot, but you’re right, not a lot of attention for that one.
Again, some of the best movies come out of drama with the shoot. I know that it’s not comfortable for giants like Spielberg, but it sure would be my goal to try and make it as difficult as possible.

You ever watched the fan edit- “Jaws: The Sharkploitation Edit”?
I’ve got it downloaded, but not yet watched. But I reckon it’ll be a fun ride.
I did watch “The War Of The Stars” by the same guys. A fan edit of Star Wars done in a 70’s grainy style with deleted scenes inserted, fan films inserted, Neil Young and his Jawa stage hands as the cantina band etc. They’ve basically scratched up the film and audio to make it look and sound like a 70’s grind-house movie. Vaders eyes glow red when he uses the force, Luke goes rogue in his X-Wing. I really enjoyed watching something I am so familiar with presented in a different format.
And I prefer this versions delivery by Obi-Wan of “You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy….what a shithole!”

ParticipantHey Robby, I agree with every sentence.
Hey Ori, I haven’t seen either yet but thanks for the pointer(s).

ParticipantHey you guys, remember when I said I was trying not to give in to the tempatation to post iconic shots? I might not be very good at that.

ParticipantI haven’t seen it since it first came out on video, and I didn’t really like it that much. I wonder if I’d like it more if I watched it now. I don’t know.

ParticipantDepends on how much you like Michael Mann. And Daniel Day-Lewis. And injuns. Wait, that’s not PC. I meant redskins.

ParticipantWALTZ WITH BASHIR (2008)
I saw this on the big ‘ol big screen during a film festival that year and it remains my favourite film from 2008, and is in my top 10 of that decade. Probably even top 5 (as if I’ll ever take the time to make that list). The only bad thing about it is it’d taken Ari Folman 6 freakin’ years to finish another film.

KeymasterI’m enjoying it (the posting of the screens) and I’ve been tempted to do it a few times. I’m just all kinds of crazy busy here. Work is a huge pile of stuff to do, reviews with high ranking folks and all that. Home life has been super chaotic… maybe I’ll try to find a way to distribute some comments on such things. If I ever have time.

ParticipantNever saw Waltz with Bashir. Wonder if it’s on demand somewheres.
I plan on doing some of my own at some point, I just haven’t because I’m lazy.

ParticipantIf you can’t be shagged taking your own screengrabs there are a bunch of sites which post them. I’ve amassed a ton of my own over the years but many of them are SD so I’ll often check out Blu-ray sites for HD versions. For e.g. I have that shot of Quint among more than 200 SD Jaws caps on my hard drive but the one I posted here is an HD version that’s a few frames off the one I took years ago. I didn’t mean this thread to feel like homework, just a fun way to dork out on some cool slices of cinematography. It doesn’t matter where they come from.

ParticipantMOONRISE KINGDOM (2012)
Some directors/DoPs compose their shots. Wes Anderson COMPOSES his shots. He also tells beautifully bittersweet stories really darn well.
