So they’re shooting The Hobbit in 3D.

Before, as much as I don’t like 3D, if a movie I really wanted to see was only available in 3D locally, I’d go see it anyhow. I’ve decided not to put up with that any longer. Why would I want to pay a more expensive price to get a splitting headache, a darker, fuzzier image, and a less enjoyable experience?

So I’ve decided if a movie I want to see is only available in 3D, even if it’s a big movie I want to see as much as I want to see The Hobbit, I’ll just wait until it comes out on 2D disc.

Shooting in 3D doesn’t mean it’s only available in 3D. I’ve yet to see a movie not available in 2D.

Normally, I’d agree with you, but The Hobbit is going to be something special. It’s actually like Peter Jackson heard you – I’ll let him describe it.

After watching that, I’m really curious to see if your opinion is different…

I’ve found that 2D viewings are available, but all of them at ridiculous showtimes that are unreasonable to attend. I really do feel held to ransom for 3D experiences that I never really wanted in the first place.

I wish some government or independantly run enquiry looked into the matter. There must be some laws or rules that are being broken!

As for The Hobbit in 3D. Given the choice of 3D or nothing, I’ll take the 3D. I’ll also probably see the Star wars 3D versions rather than nothing, if only to see the Star Wars universe on the big screen again.

However, 90% of movies I want to see that are a 3D or nothing scenario ain’t gonna get my cash. Many films have lost out over this last 12 months because they have tried to force me into 3D showings.

And by “they”, I mean the cinema groups for having stupid 2D showtimes. I would say, overall, they have lost out in my case

Are you referring to their video number four Robby? Or are you referring to something on there that I missed? If you’re referring to the video, that’s the video that made me come write this post in the first place.

When he said he would have done Lord of the Rings in 3D if 3D was available to him then, I cringed.

I know they’ll do a 2D version of it as well, but that doesn’t mean it’ll be available in 2D locally. It might only be available in 3D locally, like some other past movies have been.

I’m afraid I have to go one step farther than Ori and say regardless of the movie, if it’s 3D or nothing, then for me it’s nothing, because I don’t need to pay higher ticket prices to have a physically uncomfortable experience.

Yeah, I think this one’s going to be different. 5K, 48 FPS? The fact that it’s being shot with a quality not available in anything ever displayed publicly sort of concerns me, because that will mean fitting new theaters to be able to screen these movies, but this excited me, because it’s the level of detail that not even Avatar, arguably the best 3D experience ever, was unable to achieve.

One of the things stated in an earlier video blog was that they have been viewing dailies all day long and weren’t having issues with viewing the 3D. Who knows, though – people may have the same problems as before, but I think that the tech they’re throwing at this thing does a lot to alleviate the issues that many have said while viewing. Of course, I’ve only ever watched one 3D movie, so maybe I would experience the same discomfort if I had watched some of these other movies.

Man, I don’t know. I’m just excited about seeing the tech in action. I loved seeing Avatar in 3D and really enjoyed it when Panasonic was making their tours with their first 3DTVs and got to see some cool shit, like a clip of one of the opening ceremonies at the Olympics that made me lose my mind. The problem is that there’s so much lackluster 3D being pushed in people’s faces that many have developed a hatred for it.

So, uh, yeah, I’m excited, I guess. I just hope the movie itself doesn’t suck.

i’ve never had a problem with odd 2d showtimes. i watched Avatar and the new Tron in 3d and have absolutely no plans to see any movie in 3d until they each have a sequel. i will cling to 2d as long as i can. they’ll have to pry it from my cold, dead hands.

Trouble is, usually when we go to the cinema, it’s a family outing. Which means they go into a screening for some shite and I go into another for something I actually want to watch. Not many of the 2D presentations match up with end times for us all to meet up again. In fact most are at stupid O’clock in the morning or late at night!!

I’ve never forgiven stupid 2D showtimes of my preferences forcing me to go into one of their movie choices….Alvin And The Chipmonks 2. The Squeakual….

    i’m confused.

are you in a stationary position and listening as an entity known as “that shit” is driving around in the car? or are you in the car?

are you driving around in the car with a passenger known as “that shit” and are having to listen to said “that shit”?

if these don’t apply, is there some other relational dynamic between you and “that shit” that does?

So, uh, the first reviews have come out…

I think we’ll need to temper our expectations, although mine are mostly already tempered. The main reason I’m still excited is because I love the making of movies, and this will be a new experience with the 48 fps and 3d and stuff.

Read a couple more reviews, and they’re a bit more forgiving than the one I posted. And, the 48 fps thing seems to be a subject of debate – some think it looks too distracting, some say it’s completely engrossing. Who knows?

I will say that it seems to be almost unanimous that there seem to be some pacing problems, i.e., get to the damn point kinda thing. Hmm.

Mine were pretty tempered once they stretched this short book to 3 movies too. I thought the trailer was fairly strong but even so, my feelings have been much more on the side of curiosity than hype. At least we don’t have to wait 4 extra months to see it like we do with Cloud Atlas. I think that doesn’t even come out here until February.

Are you going to watch Life of Pi Robby? I read the book a few years ago and have heard some mixed reviews of the film. It looks ridiculously pretty at the very least.

If like to. It’s got an 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, so that bodes well.
