Yeah, a decent read. It won’t make the movie any “better”, but may be really fun to watch it for the subtleties of who he was, and who he becomes. It was never apparent to me, I believe that I’ve always dismissed the “prequel fact” as a tool to (exactly as stated) give him a different villain to fight.
But it does make the entire opening of The Last Crusade unfortunate. In fact, it’s likely that if I watch ToD now watching for these things, that I’ll never unsee it, and Crusade will have a problem with it that I will have a hard time getting over. Especially if it’s obvious that “Indy” is born in ToD. You know me and my “play in the universe you create” rules. If it’s obvious, Crusade will quite blatantly screw things up, and will no longer feel like unnecessarily long backstory, it will just feel like a fan film jammed into the front of the movie.
Or maybe there is something in there to support a longer character story? Maybe he saw things the right way (dad’s upbringing, or natural passion?), then after all that happened, and years of growing up in the real world he becomes the ‘white tux’ Dr Jones.
Nah, I’m hoping for too much there.
