I could try to explain it but instead here’s the article link I found the video on. It’s pretty damn neato.

I’ve done the post version of this with photography, but seldom see it used with video. It’s pretty cool looking, but video can be tougher, as you have to mask ‘in-focus’ items when they move to keep the depth of field looking consistent for miniature. It’s pretty cool stuff. I see some problem sections with the video here, but who cares. It’s fun.

i love photos like this, but seeing it in motion is really amazing.

all we need now is to convince michael bay to use this technique on transformers 3.

My essence still senses Bucho's women.

This is one trick I don’t see being used in porn.

The problem with tilt-shift photography is the cost of the lens, I’d rather buy a car.
The effects look great though, especially when you YouTube some of the movies.
I agree with Bing, never in porn. It will either make Mr. Winky look like a microbe (never a good thing with a guy), or, it’ll make the furry axe wound look like the Grand Canyon (also not a good thing, you ever thrown a sausage into a road tunnel?).

If it doesn’t work, jam a screwdriver in there and jiggle it about.

I’ve missed you and your quiptastic posts Pa-ul.

One of the things I love about these films, especially those that have fluids in them, is finally small shit moves with real physics. Not that Thunderbirds and Joe 90 don’t have a goofy charm with their massive dam-breaks, tidal waves and explosions, but I love watching this tilt-shift video just for how mesmerizing it is.

tilt-shift lenses are still photography only. The motion of the lens (as far as I understand it) would cause major motion artifacts with film. With photography, you are exposing the image while the lens shifts on the horizontal or vertical plan to create the effect. It couldn’t exactly move back and forth with video.

The current trend is entirely digital anyway. The effect of the hardware method is a pretty realistic one, but depends more on subject matter, framing and focal length and such. The digital methods of doing this are much more forgiving (even if slightly less cool) and that’s what (as far as I know) is being used for video. That’s a lot of masks though.
