so i’ve been hitting the high spots and wanted to mention a couple things.

the audio is the star here. this audio mix (on the collection as a whole) has quickly moved to my top 5. the LFE during darth vader’s first force choke in episode IV is pitch perfect. it’s clearly there but also subtle at the same time. weird to describe but effective in action. and the episode I pod race? aural orgasm.

video is really good and colors pop except for Phantom Menace. Phantom Menace on Blu-ray is plagued by the same problem the DVD version had. sure, there are many scenes that are crisp and cleanly detailed with vibrant color but just like the DVD edition there are plenty of scenes that suffer from being a muddy muted mess. it’s really disappointing that the movie is still so visually inconsistent.

the opening to Revenge of the Sith is still one of my favorites in any movie. but i think overally i prefer the picture quality of the original trilogy. probably because of the color palette and mostly practical sets and effects.

    definitely don’t regret the purchase.

with all the complaining i did about the changes to the blu-ray i just want to say that none of the ones i was most worried about have bothered me.

obi-wan’s krayt dragon cry actually sounds good. and darth vader’s “NOOOOOOOOOO!” isn’t really all that bad.

but i just have to say “thank you george lucas!” for changing the han/greedo scene in ep. 4.

no, han doesn’t shoot first again. but neither does greedo! they fire at the same time now. when i saw it i thought i was remembering it wrong and had to double check.

i’m a little disappointed they used the same transfer to master these that they used for the ’04 dvd release. now that i’ve had some time to actually watch more than just the “high spots” it’s really obvious these are from the same master. yes, the audio is triple A and yes these are miles above the cropped letterbox DVDs. but these certainly aren’t first on my list of titles to show off how good blu-ray can look. i guess we’ll get a new transfer after the films go through their 3d theatrical runs. and i be willing to bet some of the deleted scenes will be added to the films as well.

i don’t regret the purchase but there is room to improve.

I have only watched IV so far, and you’re right – the audio is really why this is a must-have. I mean, I thought it looked great (and Princess Leia bouncing around in HD? Oh yes), but I think if you don’t have a great sound system, then all you’re left with is the best the Saga has ever looked and lots of cool special features. Wait. Yeah, I guess it’s still a must-have.

    I’m extremely pleased.

and i haven’t even had a chance to check out the 3 discs of extras. so i’m looking forward to those as well.

this really is a must-have set. my hatred for lucas and all his changes over the years has greatly diminished with this release.

and i said earlier that the audio was in my top 5 (when i was hitting the high spots) but that should now be changed to top 3.

    I don’t own a HD television. I don’t even have a BluRay player….but I am still probably going to get this. 🙂

    ….there’s just no rush though.

Watching Jedi, and something very strange has happened. The Ewoks – they’re…endearing. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I actually like the Ewoks now. I think a lot of it is Warwick Davis – seeing what he did with body language is just amazing. Strange, isn’t it? I honestly think that part of it is that it’s been a long time since I actually WATCHED it, if that makes any sense.

What a great series. The same thing happened when I watched Episodes I-III. I was much more forgiving of the silly shit, seeing that the storytelling really is masterfully done. They’re STILL better than 95% of the movies that come out every year.

Yeah, everyone’s all over Peter Dinklage’s dick these days but he’d be nothing if it wasn’t for Warwick Davis paving the path to glory.

Rob, this whole post got me to thinking about how i went into this set biased and expecting to be disappointed.

so i went back and watched Ep. I since i was so hard on it in my initial thoughts. it’s definitely not as bad as i made it seem. i was just really trying to nitpick it. this set really is the best Star Wars experience we’ve ever been able to have at home.

Yeah, I don’t know if it’s old age or what, but regardless of the movie, I’ve just been able to put aside feelings of what we could’ve had. It’s made me enjoy movies more in general.
