Version3
KeymasterMaybe this just slipped past me before, or I rolled my eyes so hard I got dizzy, passed out and forgot about it… there is a 2012 theatrical release scheduled for The Phantom Menace. Oh, and it’s in fucking 3D. I was reading an article over at fxguide.com and there is this timeline for 3D conversion, and right there at the end:
Quote:The Phantom Menace(set for a 2012 theatrical release)
John Knoll supervising conversion. Lucasfilm working with other vendors.
I actually had no idea at all that this was going on, and that the plan is to release all 6 of them in 3D. Great, JarJar’s tongue flapping about after being shocked in 3D. I’m betting the pod race ends up being 66 minutes long, or 1138 minutes long for more apparent 3D shots just to make sure we all get to see it. Fuck this.

ParticipantSure, I have problems with some of the prequel trilogy. Sure, all the movies have scenes that should have been deleted and pooped on. Sure, I agree with the idea that if George Lucas was so interested in things in the prequel trilogy mirroring the original then he should have had Episode 1 be Anakin’s training, Episode II being the Clone Wars with the fall of Anakin to the dark side at the end and Episode III being the hunting-down of all the Jedi and Obi-Wan’s and Yoda’s exile.
But I’ll probably still be there.

Participantseems like i remember spielberg and lucas mentioning this a couple years ago when they learned they could retrofit 3d to older movies shot in 2d.
i’ll break down pay to see movies like avatar and tron that were actually shot in 3d but i refuse to go to any movie that was shot in 2d and converted to 3d. not unless spielberg and lucas have some new conversion technology that the rest of hollywood doesn’t know about. some new process where the end result isn’t a bastardized mess of uneven lighting and skewed proportions.

KeymasterEven if they do have some amazing incredible technology that only they know about… is it going to bring anything extra to those movies? Avatar was unique in that not only was the 3D process more immersive in general, but one of the things that so damn cool about it is that you are seeing that alien world for the first time. The viewing experience gives it more depth, added realism and just some additional fun in general. I don’t think have 34 minutes of sand and pod racers whizzing buy will provide even one of those things.

Participantit’s really hard to fault someone for going because these movies (for a lot of people, myself included) epitomizes what going to the movies is all about. or at least the original trilogy does this for me. and there is something about seeing it on the big screen.
as fans, we go for that reason. to see the movies that made going to see movies such a joy.
but it’s a double-edged sword because the more and more lucas does to bastardize them he isn’t punished because we will pay to see them again and again both in theaters and in new home video formats.
i feel like we’re all battered wives staying with an abusive husband for the sake of the children.
i hope i will be strong enough to stay home for most of these. but i have to admit, i may have to see episodes IV and V.

ParticipantWhen will the studios realize that some people get heavy headaches with them damn glasses and also where is the demand for these films in 3D? It just seems to me they are forcing a product onto a market that isn’t there. I mean who here is going to go buy a 3D television and sit there with special glasses at home to watch regular tv?
I just don’t want to see this spiral into everything 3D. There is a reason this shit didn’t stick the first time we tried it in the 60’s or 70’s

KeymasterLuckily, even the TVs that don’t require glasses aren’t doing so well in the market. Dumbass analysts are still trying to say it’s price-point, and to an extent, they may be right for the sheep. But if the upper end of the market don’t adopt, it’s likely nobody will. So, I’d say in-home has already seen what it’s life-cycle may be for this go ’round.
In theater is a different story. I think only ‘movie people’ hate 3D… seems like all of the dumbasses that make shit movies popular by handing over money actually think they like that shit. I read through some of the comments on that article that led me to post above, and was surprised and annoyed (that I couldn’t punch them in the thorax) at how many people were ASKING and EXCITED about more movies in 3D. Fuck. That.

I think it’s a perfect viewpoint on why 3d will never catch on.
More than anything, if they can do it like Cameron did for Avatar, 3d would be awesome in theaters, but they keep half-adding it.
February 3, 2011 at 3:49 am #28427Version3
KeymasterI think even if they did it exactly like Cameron did it (though appropriate to the film in question), audiences would still tire of it. I maintain that if that had been a non-alien world, it would have harder to deal with the forced points of focus, the defined depth of field and the constant attention the surroundings were getting. I enjoyed the movie, but had it not been an alien world, the treatment would have made it a far weaker movie. I think it would have created a very “Hey that’s cool… can you get on with the fucking movie please?” kinda feel. Particularly on repeat viewings. But, there is a lot to be said for being the first huge immersive experience. Porting that to other movie experiences wouldn’t yield the same results. The Apollo landing modules were super impressive too… now you can find more computing power in a Furby.
What I mean by that, is doing it to his standard and with his quality is not the movie experience, unless we are talking about a nature journey. –otherwise, it’s cool until it’s been done a lot, the it starts to detract from the movie until the point that it ruins it, or defines it.
Yeah, I read that shit… you wanna fight about it?!?
