I put this in Fanboy because I have to admit being a fan of Jackass. When I read the news yesterday I was shocked and a little saddened.
BUT…
He was a jackass, no question. They have estimated he was going 120 when he ran into the 40 feet of forestry and burst into flames, killing him and his passenger (he died later, I believe). Yeah, Jackass indeed.
“People should wait to see if he was intoxicated before they make judgments.” Really? The tweeted picture of him drinking at the bar he was at, and he was found all burnt and crispy between the bar and his house? Convicted of many DUIs? Now, I’m no Sherlock Holmes, but I kinda see how this one’s gonna turn out.
Then Roger Ebert goes and tweets the obvious – “Friends don’t let jackasses drink and drive.”, and he gets chastised for it? For telling the truth? Drinking and driving is stupid as hell, and I think we all know someone who’s done it, been in the car with someone doing it, or done it ourselves. But that doesn’t excuse the behavior at all, dammit!
Is it tragic? Of course it’s tragic. It’s tragic that someone that entertained me did something so fucking stupid. It’s tragic that Bam Margera can’t see beyond his own loss to see that his friend basically committed suicide and murder, and that Roger Ebert was just telling it like it is.
I think they ought to put the Jackass warning at the beginning of the shows and the movies on Ryan’s grave. I’ve said for many years that some people are on this planet merely to be an example to the rest of us of what not to do. So yeah, I’m not going to drive my Porsche GT3 120 mph on the way home after a night of drinking. And I don’t think I’ll try putting a toy car in my butt, either, thanks.
I missed all of the flack Ebert was catching, because I was in the one place where the internet is not allowed to be fun –work.
Fuck people.
You’d think the death of one of those guys would at least be entertaining enough for a Darwin award. Instead it’s just the most mundane form of retardation.
