ParticipantDon’t worry Rusty, in a few years you’ll get used to your new tablet…just be careful with it at first, it’s meaner and stronger than your little boy one….and it can get you into more trouble at school than any grenade launcher.
Just finished listen #1 of the show, I go back and give ’em all a good 2 or 3 listens to make sure I catch all the comedic goodness and such..
One thing I do want to comment on is this idea of SOS as a commercial viability. I never got the impression you guys would “go mainstream” while I was listening to the shows these past few years. Rather I was expecting this underground cult following to emerge. I share Bryan’s frustration (at least in some degree…I didn’t bust my ass for 3 years to not get attention that was fairly due, unlike him) that something didn’t seem to develop momentum and grow the show to a wider or larger audience. It may very well be a case of being “overlooked” or “missed” by an audience that would appreciate and want content like this. That is something beyond control and since when did good entertainment equal successful entertainment?
Flavor of Love anyone?…American Idol?….Dog the Bounty Hunter?….
It just seems obvious to me that there is a core dedication to this show (in any form) and most of us are at worst marginally talented individuals…at best we are pretty damn good in our areas of expertise…I mean I’ve NEVER seen anyone fuck a goat like Bucho. Nbliangw
my point is this
surely SOS can’t be really dead….more like mostly dead.September 28, 2007 at 2:21 am #14285El Rustirino

I personally thought Switched: On was on their way up when the guys went to do their show live at the movie theater before that one Star Wars movie came out. I thought, “Oh, cool! They’re going to do their show live. Now they’re really going places.”

KeymasterYeah me too. I never expected us to become this morning zoo type commercialized deal, we were always too much against that. I just expected that we would be a licensed content provider for something that buys a lot of lower dollar (read not 10mil per year) content, like satellite or something.
September 28, 2007 at 6:40 pm #14261rob
ParticipantSatellite would be cool. And it’s not like our budget would be high.
September 28, 2007 at 6:47 pm #14250Version3
KeymasterNot even. We would have been a nothing purchase for them, and we’d have given hours of content per week. Imagine if they did a 3am Sat/Sun block of SOS. It would have really taken off.
The limitations in terms of show growth, came entirely from the niche medium we decided to supply it. We break so many fundamental rules of podcasting (specifically show length) that growth potential was limited from the outset. The vast majority of people that would understand, identify with and really enjoy our format have no fucking clue what podcasting really is, and wouldn’t bother to go out of their way to find us. -But if they just had to tune the station on something that is second nature to them… BAM!
I’d have done commercials, and products, and I’d have made fun of them, or discussed them in such a way as to make their name known, yet not feel like an advertisement… audio product placement, and those other two crazy fuckers would have really had a field day with sponsorships. Look at what we did with mortgages. 🙂 Now, I don’t know how they’d gauge success, but we’d definitely be able to identify their target. An AXE, a Miller, a game release, a DVD release would have real legs on a program like ours. Without having to be traditional advertising or force us to make concessions on the show’s format. We like stuff, and we talk about stuff. We’d love to have gotten paid to talk about other people’s stuff too.

ParticipantNot to deviate from the current topic, but I have a question. Have you guys ever filmed a show? And if so, will it be released as a download?
September 28, 2007 at 7:41 pm #14270digitaltopia
ParticipantWhat sort of effort has ever been made in this direction? I don’t mean by the three guys, I mean by the core listeners. Have we sent information packets to radio stations? Have we bugged and pestered satellite stations to give the show a look?
Anything that’s done in those directions needs to be well-written and passionate, without being zealous or over the top. Focus on the monetary benefit to them… low cost, lots of unique content (it can even include progressive electronic music from time to time, thanks to Jerry), and a unique way of pitching products.
Face it guys, the only way we’re really going to get more Switched: On now is if this takes off for them.

ParticipantWow. A very heartfelt argument. It warms the heart to hear such non-gay man love.
Just, in case you do send out little packets, just make sure you include the fact that I require a lifetime supply of Mountain Dew Code Red and a date with my favorite worn-out almost-makes-me-puke-but-still-get-uncomfortable-by-the-right-picture celebrity, LL.
(Just kidding.)

ParticipantHa ha, maybe this way Bryan could get that sponsorship with Red Line, and Robby could flush his cheeks with MDCR..
And Jerry..
um…
Jerry could..drink..Howard Jones, um, Howard Jones Soda.
Made of 100percent real Howard Jones.

ParticipantTHX, we have never filmed a full show. We have filmed parts of very few shows. And of those parts, we have made very few snippets. And from those snippets, like, .5 second clips, we have made avatars. And from those avatars, we have never used one. Answer your question?
Okay, I got carried away. Very few video clips exist. I have no idea where they are.

ParticipantOver the last three or so months I’ve relistened to every show (except 101 – that, is work), and some of them I’ve heard three times now, so the last 45 minutes or so of 150 was a hugely compelling part of the show for me. I didn’t listen from 000 to 149 chronologically, but I did listen mostly in order from certain points so I was even more aware of the development of the show than I was on the initial listens.
So while each of the boys talk about their own development within the show I could relate it pretty well to what I’d been hearing. I’d heard the changes the boys talked about in 150, Bryan’s becoming more relaxed with his own voice and on-air personality, and Rob’s coming to trust his own instinct more instead of looking to Jerry. The same thing with Bryan mentioning that his behind-the-scenes life had become more settled with the job he has now, I distinctly remember even on the first listen through that he seemed to become more relaxed and funnier around that time. Same with the way the show evolved when the boys were working in the same place, how the story side of the show fell away compared to the silliness side.
I also always like the story of how SOS came about, from Jerry getting the ipod and accidentally discovering podcasting to the recording of the first show. I mean, this show has meant something to me, more than just entertainment. Like the way a great band or movie means something to me, it’s not life or death but it’s deeper than just pure entertainment, it effects me in some way beyond the laughs. But movies and bands and TV shows are easy to find, they’re thrust at you. I found podcasting by accident, just like Jerry did. Then I found SOS way down at 22 or 25 on Podcast Alley. I don’t believe in destiny or fate but I like seeing how connections get made between people. I just count myself lucky that I even found out that these guys and their creation exist somewhere in the world because it would only have taken a small twist of fate for that discovery to have never happened.
As for the questions raised in that last 45 minutes …
Were you just missed or not what you think you are? It’s very, very common for quality entertainment to be missed or underappreciated. As good as you think it is? I think so. In fact I think in some ways you underestimated some of your shows. There are certainly parts of some shows that dragged enough to lose listeners I’m sure, that are even harder to listen to a second time and that would’ve stopped a lot of people having a second dose of SOS if that’d been their first exposure to the show. That’s been freely acknowledged though, and is just part of the nature of the uneditted format.
And something else I noticed listening again was how wrong you guys could be about the quality of some of your shows. You’d underestimate the entertainment value of shows with fewer laughs and more stories. The stuff that really sticks in my mind and defines the show for me is equally the funny stuff and the stories. There are obvious comedic SOS touchstones but there have been so many memorable stories also that I like just as much.
This shit has rambled on way too long and I can’t remember what I was trying to say anymore but goddamnit 150 was aces. Clothes for genitals … the one-upmanship game … dopey Vader and Stallone Solo … the guy who’s wowed by everything … Kenneth’s song … prime numbers … garageband for Africa … Jerry weirdness at work messing with the new guy … job interview craziness …
I loved the shit out of it.

ParticipantThanks salad…glad you enjoyed.
I’m just glad he is a good sport about such things, otherwise there may be a plane-load of angry goats and such on the way to my house….
Fact is I simply refuse to believe something this unique and special can be allowed to die when crap fills the internet and airwaves around us…..Bryan’s got something up his sleeve, I just have to believe that….
and if not then maybe Rob’s got something in his shorts.
