    Hi guys.

I’ve been doing a bit of random back catalogue listening, jumping from various episode to episode to fill up my “daily podcast playlist” for work when it’s running a little short. A couple of weeks ago I decided to just do them in order and burned through the first 20….except for Show 1. For some reason, this file won’t download. Just thought I’d point it out..

Seems weird listening to these podcasts from the distant past. Hearing your excitement about the release of Star wars Episode 3 and talking about your young children who are all probably about as old as my kids now… and not so little.

I was curious though how you do listener figure wise compared to back in the early days of podcasting. I imagine there are a lot more people listening to podcasts today, but with so many more out there to listen to, I was curious how the figures compare.

Also, I have to tell you what my thoughts were on first hearing Switched:On. My first thoughts were “Yeah. It’s funny. Reminds me of a lot of other podcasts out there I’ve listened to like Mediocre Show or Jamhole”.

But one thing I’ve noticed which is giving this show the advantage over other similar shows is the amount of cultural references I actually get and share.

For example: I wanted a nostalgic show that talked a lot about the 80’s. TV, music, movies and general 80’s theme’s. But I found all of them didn’t really talk about the stuff that I remembered. The hosts were all in their late teens for the early part of the 80’s and talk about stuff that, as a kid, I didn’t really watch or listen to. They also talked about stuff which was very American and didn’t really mean anything to me in the UK. It was kind of annoying and in the end, I stopped looking for 80’s shows after crossing this same problem again and again and agian.

Your show is different. I get every reference. Not just a few or most. All of them. You can never talk too much Star Wars which is basically the whole of my childhood. You talk about 80’s pop. From Phil Collins to Midge Ure to Big Country….shit! Everything. You talk about Goonies and Short Circuit.
Anyway. Just wanted to say I was enjoying.

Also, thanks to Bucho for finally getting me to listen. (I still don’t like the last Machete commentary though 🙂 )

That’s awesome mate, I always suspected from what I know of your taste in entertainment that Switched On would be right up your alley.

And yeah, listening to the back catalogue is funny like that. I was listening to a show last week and Robby’s all, “Hey, did you hear that James Cameron is working on some crazy new 3D technology?”

I was thinking today about when Jerry’s talking about Elvis looking for a snack bar in an adult bookstore, and thought, “it’d be cool to listen to those clips Jerry did a while back”, put ’em on the iPhone and listened on the way to visit the in-laws. There are 1,233 individual clips, and that particular one came on within 10 minutes. I mean, what are the odds of that?

Glad to hear you’re enjoying the back catalog!

Show 1 should be fixed now. It was a typo that’s been there for who knows how long. Nice find!

I have just sync’d shows 000-010 to my phone. I want to go back and listen to the entire catalog. I’ve been meaning to do it for a few years. The kind of work I’m doing now allows for plenty of headphone time. I have gone back and listened to the first 20 shows a few times but I hope to make it all the way through this time.
