Bucho
ParticipantI thought How To Train Your Dragon looked pretty undercooked design-wise but it was a really cool story and it has a really good soundtrack. Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs was so awesome I’ve watched it twice.

ParticipantWow. A Bucho double take? That’s something. I have been wanting to watch it again but I’m very far behind in my movie watchin’. (and not because of Bruce Campbell and Mr. T)

KeymasterI thought HTTYD was okay, but haven’t watched the other two. Just didn’t grab me at the time, and now my time machine is broken. It’s weird, because I’ll go on runs where I’m not watching much (the side effect is I’m usually more productive), but then times like these I feel like I’ve watched everything current and even a little future. I guess some of those were during productive times. I wonder if they coincide with show releases?

ParticipantI’m always behind on the movie watching these days and I think it’s because I watch too many TV comedies.
I really enjoyed how ugly the creatures were in Rango too – even the love interest was grotesque and the cute little kid was creepy as fuck. I liked the general trippiness too, especially at the beginning, but ultimately the story didn’t tie up well at all and the climactic scenes were fairly underwhelming.
I really liked Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs a lot. So much I rate it better than about half of Pixar’s films.

i’m just glad my bowel movements aren’t synchronized to show releases. 😀

ParticipantI don’t know if you guys actually read these, but I enjoy watching movies and I enjoy voicing my opinions, so this kinda works out for me.
The Man From Earth – So this is a pretty old movie that was suggested to me by John-Michael — it tells the story of a teacher (from Earth, apparently) that is preparing to move, and has an interesting conversation with his fellow colleagues. Written by one of the dudes who wrote Star Trek and Twilight Zone episodes, it really could have been done as a play instead of a movie. To be honest, the cinematography is pretty bad — it almost looks like it was shot by a student. It takes place in a living room and outside, and that is the extent of the scenery, but that’s really not the point — the story being told is the interesting thing, and I don’t really want to give anything away. This is available as an on-demand title from Netflix, and if you have a couple of hours to kill, I believe you could do worse. Tony Todd is in it, and he affirms what I’ve always suspected — that he could be a killer dramatic actor. Actually, good acting all around, mostly from TV actors, but like I said, the story is really what’s interesting. 3 stars
The Adventures of Tintin – Now THIS is what I’m talking about — Spielberg at his best. I loved this movie so much I went and bought the Blu-Ray and just enjoy the hell out of it. It almost makes me think that if Spielberg had had a better script for Indy 4, it could’ve been this good. There are a couple of pacing problems in the movie, but the pure moviemaking joy I got from it was worth all the warts. If you haven’t seen it, check it out — I don’t care if you think animation is beneath you or you think this doesn’t appeal to you — I personally guarantee that it is worth your time. 3 2/3 stars
Hugo – This one was a disappointment. I guess my biggest problem is it felt like it needed a good editor. It also seems like it’s two different movies — I want to say it gets about halfway through it when this sudden “Movies are magic!” message starts to invade the story. I did enjoy this part of it, but it seemed forced into the rest of the movie — almost like Marty realized that they needed something to give some weight to it and why not, movies are magic, so why not spend some time showing our love for the movies! It was just so uneven. So, I guess I can say that I enjoyed parts of it, and I’m glad I watched it, but I’ll never watch it again. 2 1/2 stars
Rob Roy – For some reason, I’d never seen this one. Maybe it’s because I heard it was a love story, maybe it’s because at the time I didn’t think much of Liam Neeson, or maybe Braveheart was so good I couldn’t see myself watching another Scottish story in the same year. But this was another suggestion from John-Michael, and it was free on Netflix, so why not? My opinion is — meh. Yes. Weird seeing a movie with so much sexuality in it released in 1995. It just seemed kinda weird. I wanted to punch Rob’s brother Alasdair in the dick because he was so damn stupid, and that last swordfight between Liam and Tim Roth was a joke — basically because I think Tim Roth’s character would have destroyed Rob. And then, happy ending! I dunno, just not my kind of movie. 2 stars
Shame – I’d been wanting to watch this ever since I read the first review of it, because it seemed like the kind of movie that I typically sink my teeth into. Story about a dude that’s hopelessly addicted to sex, sister comes to town, messes up his game, chaos ensues. I will say that the subject matter practically guaranteed an NC-17 rating, but I will tell you that none of the sex in this movie is there for the eroticism. It’s just a very sad, methodical character study. I love Carey Mulligan, because she’s cute AND sexy (a rare mix) and Michael Fassbender is just fucking awesome (no pun intended). I like seeing popular actors take on dangerous roles, and these two are so realistic in their portrayal that it almost plays like a documentary at times. Even though I’ll never watch it again, I will give it my highest rating. 4 stars

ParticipantTo my shame I haven’t seen Shame yet. I think I missed Rob Roy for the same reasons as you back in the day – it just seemed like a lesser Braveheart (movie boner moments ahoy in that one).
I’m with you on Tintin too – as flawed as it might be it doesn’t really matter because it’s a shitload of fun once it gets to the action scenes.

KeymasterI had technical issues watching Tintin, but I think those are resolved now.
I’ve had… uh… “access” to Shame for a while now, but the trailer is so blah, that I haven’t gotten around to watching it yet. I told Jessica that Rob gave it 4 stars, and I think we are going to watch it in the next night or two.

ParticipantI’ll pretty much watch anything with Michael Fassbender by now. I figure that even if it’s a shit movie that guy is incredibly watchable.

ParticipantThink Jessica would actually like an actor-driven character study with graphic sex? It’s so depressing, that I just don’t think of it as a normal movie that a couple would just watch. For me, I watch all kinds of shit.
Hey, what do I know?

KeymasterSometimes one hooks her… most of the time she’d just say it’s boring as shit. Graphic sex probably won’t bother her because of all of the midget eskimo all-anal clown porn we already watch together.
May 9, 2012 at 12:08 am #31089rob
ParticipantI say graphic – its not like penetration type stuff, but you’ll see what I’m talking about, that it’s like, “Yeah, that’s over the R line”.

ParticipantChronicle – Although the last 20 minutes or so are a bit over the line, story-wise, it had some amazing imagery. Overall, I liked the movie quite a bit. I kept forgetting what this one was when I saw the title. Chronicle?…oh, yeah, the kids who get superpowers, right. It’s strange, but a lot of the imagery is so well done, it sort of transports you into it, and I thought it was really effective. Is it a great movie? Not really, but it has enough to make you want to see what’s next for this first time director, Fatty McButterpants. 3 stars
The Samaritan – I think Sam Jackson is a lot like Denzel — they sort of just play themselves, and if you like them, chances are you’ll like them in anything. I am a non-apologetic fan of Sam Jackson, regardless of his real acting potential, so I was happy to see him do a movie where he’s really the only big star in the movie. I’m guessing this has flown under the radar for most of you, so here…

Looks pretty good, right? Well, I hate to say it, but the movie sucks. It has SO many good ideas, and then it basically holds you down and shits on your face. Things happen here not because it’s an organic movement from one scene to the next, but simply because the script requires them to happen. I know that it may seem strange, but you can just feel it when a movie doesn’t flow correctly, and this one doesn’t. To be honest, I want to spoil this movie so badly so people don’t even waste their time on it.
Now, don’t get me wrong, the acting is actually very good. Like, from everyone. But the ending was so scripted that it just…damn it.
Anyone else fans of pro tennis? Even if you’re not, you’ve probably heard of the Grand Slam tournaments – the French Open, Wimbledon – you get my point. Mainstream media don’t pay attention to tennis the rest of the year, when the pros play smaller tournaments that help them get ready for the Grand Slams. So for example, right now, there are tournaments going on right now on clay surfaces to prepare the players for the French Open. Clay surfaces play “faster” than other court surfaces, and there’s lots of sliding around and shit. Can be really fun to watch. But at the end of the tourney, whoever wins doesn’t matter a WHOLE lot because it’s a smaller tournament, even though the better you do, the more points you get, which can affect your rankings, and eventually how difficult or easy your earlier rounds could be for the next tournament.
Too much? Okay — pre-season football. There you go. Whoever wins those don’t matter much at all until the season actually starts. It’s neat to see the dynamics of a team before the season actually starts and things really start to count. Maybe they’ll try plays out to see if they work.
The Samaritan is a pre-season game. I’m sure that acting is a lot like any skill — you need to keep at it to stay sharp. And like a pre-season game, an actor can try things he wouldn’t do in other movies when he’s in a smaller movie like this. I respect that. But damn it, this one almost fools you into thinking that this is a regular season game and could actually matter, but nope! Fuck you, this one’s just a tryout! (Still like Sam, though. You’re the man.) One star

ParticipantI heard Fatty McButterpants has just signed a deal to direct a film with Crumpets O’Nippletits in the lead role.
Part of me is curious to see Chronicle but the other part of me doesn’t really care about films about teenagers unless Clint Eastwood is telling them to get off his lawn.

ParticipantThe Man From Earth was very interesting. i love minimal setting, character driven movies like this.
i’m a little tired of “found footage” movies but enjoyed Chronicle for the most part. it really does do a good job drawing you in though.
