ParticipantThe Ides of March – One big meh. I love Clooney, and I love Ryan Gosling, but the entirety of the movie was so cynical that it was hardly a positive message for politics. I think when your hero of the movie is himself a bad person, it’s just hard to get behind. :):)
Columbiana – I’d heard that this was originally written to be a sequel to The Professional, and now I can see why they didn’t go through with it. It took too long for anything really cool to happen, and when it did, it felt so short lived that it just seemed like a waste. The cool stuff was cool, it was just too few and far between. :):)
Conan the Barbarian – Amazing that a movie with so much gore and nudity could be so fucking boring. I checked the clock so many times – and the biggest disappointment was that Rachel Nichols used a body double. Fuck that. Jason Momoa has a lot of charisma – hope he gets better roles than this. 🙂
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo – This one sort of baffled me. Good acting, good story – but there’s nothing in the whole movie that says “Fincher”. I expected there to be that Fincher touch, but it just wasn’t there. I actually think that any skilled director could have made this. Maybe because there was so much to cover because of the intricacy of the story, but it just didn’t connect with me. I also think that I prefer the original Swedish version – it felt more taut, with more purpose. I liked Rooney Mara’s take on Lisbeth, but I also prefer Noomi Rapace’s version. I don’t think anyone could call Lisbeth Salander a “soft” character, but Rapace played her with a ferocity that Rooney didn’t have. So, while perfectly adequate, this just didn’t go all the way, so it was a little disappointing. :):):)

ParticipantDrive – I’m gonna go off on this one for a bit. First, the soundtrack was absolutely atrocious, and I don’t use that word lightly. Ooh, let’s write some 80’s songs that didn’t exist. Why? No reason for that. Took me completely out of the movie because I kept thinking, “Wow, this sucks.” Then, why the hell was Christina Hendricks in the movie? She’s so ugly, yes, UGLY. Big boobs don’t make someone hot. Of course, I’d like to see them, but that’s not the point. Totally pointless, talentless actress. Now, the movie – first half, creepy love story, second half, overly done revenge type action flick. The violence was so overdone and gory that it, again, took me out of the movie. Just ridiculous. Now, I think Ryan Gosling is one of the best actors working today, but I just don’t understand this. He doesn’t have a name, so I’m guessing they were going for some Transporter/Good Bad Ugly thing. The difference in this and those others is that the “man with no name” had a PERSONALITY. Clint had some wicked sense of humor, and Jason Statham had some one-liners that, while cheesy, gave him a sort of personality – regardless, you wanted to watch them, you wanted to root for them. In this, I didn’t feel for the Driver at all. Now, the real problem I had with the movie – it’s called “Drive”, and the trailers have the Driver say something like, some people use guns, I drive. I thought, okay, he’s going to do some awesome things in these cars. Nope. He uses guns, and knives, and sawed-off baby heads, and whatever – he barely does any fucking DRIVING. Fuck this movie in its stupid cunt. 1/2 star, because I think Carey Mulligan is cute.
Moneyball – I’m not sure what to say about this one, just because it’s pretty much a cut and dry sports movie. I liked it okay, and even though you probably could’ve put anyone in the Brad Pitt role, it does give the role some weight. I also think this is the first movie where I could actually say that I liked Jonah Hill. The only thing I wasn’t crazy about the film is that it had so few lighthearted moments in it, and it took its time getting there. Three stars
Perfect Sense – I watched this because Bryan said it was worth watching, that it wasn’t really a good movie, but it does make you think about what you would do in that situation. Basically, without giving things away, the movie is about some sort of contagion or something that is robbing people of their senses. Once i looked it up on IMDb, I realized that I had seen the trailer for it a long time ago and meant to keep it on my radar. I agree with Bryan that it is worth watching, but I actually liked it. I will say that there are few answers given in the movie, but where other lesser movies would focus on reason, this one focuses on emotion. If you put too much thought into why, it doesn’t make any damn sense at all, but I believe that the writers decided early on not to concern themselves with why, but what would this feel like? In that respect, I think they succeeded. And, how can you go wrong with Ewan McGregor and Eva Green? Everyone knows I have a man-crush on Ewan, so there is that. Eva Green – she’s weird. She’s not ugly, but she’s not exactly hot either. But she has an allure, and I think it’s because she has an exotic look, and it doesn’t hurt that she has a killer body. She’s what I used to love about the somewhat nerdy girls in school – they didn’t really dress in a way that made you automatically think of boning their earhole, but if you happened to get their shirt off, you were pleasantly surprised, and once that happened, you couldn’t keep your hands off them. Maybe that’s why I like her – she’s like, real, if that makes any sense. Sorry, kinda went off track there – I’ll never watch this again, but I did enjoy it, but only because I just let the movie take me to that emotional, vulnerable place. Three and a half stars

KeymasterI’m glad you liked Perfect Sense. I said it wasn’t a ‘great’ movie, but that I did like it. The thing I liked most about it, is just how thought provoking it is, and how it invokes emotion to force the viewer to identify with the situation, and think about how that really would be. I think it’s not just that the writers decided to not focus on it, it’s that in directing and editing, it’s practically ensured it will be a secondary issue. Anyone with an IQ higher than my ball lint, should be able to get something from the experiences of these characters, and will likely find some additional entertainment in exploring what these situations would mean if it happened in your own life.
Drive: I agree pretty much on. I expected far less, and watched it because Rob said it was supposed to be the one to watch. Obviously, neither of us thought much of it.
I enjoyed Moneyball, for a once around the block kinda run. It was a decent story, executed well with good people in it all around. The fact that it had so much hype left me with a kind of a… not quite “meh” feeling, but I definitely was like “well okay, it was good, but I don’t see what all the fuss is about”. I too like the non-hyper semi-comedic version of Jonah Hill.

ParticipantForgot to mention – did you notice Denis Lawson, Ewan’s real-life uncle who was Wedge in the Star Wars movies as the boss of the restaurant?
February 23, 2012 at 7:22 pm #31057Version3
KeymasterNo. How the fuck do you even know that? Why would you even know that? Why did people in the 70s think sideburns were a good idea?
February 23, 2012 at 11:14 pm #31084rob
ParticipantI didn’t recognize him – when I looked it up on IMDb I saw his name and was like, “Huh, Wedge.”

ParticipantSideburns have always been a good idea. Until I started letting my beard grow out about 5 years ago I wore a handsome set of mutton chops for about 10 years inspred by three of my greatest heroes, Lemmy from Motorhead, Quint from Jaws and Wolverine from somewhere in the wilds of Canadia.

KeymasterYeah, but without the claws, it’s hard to respect the ‘do’, or the chops.

ParticipantYou can get away with a supposed fashion faux pas here and there when you play in a loud heavy rock band. I even had long hair back in the day. And skinny jeans.
And I knew the scale.

ParticipantContagion – So this one is kinda weird – I watched it a few weeks ago, but I don’t remember much of it. I think that while I was watching it, it gave me the heebie-jeebies, both with all of the germy shit and the breakdown of society, and I definitely think if you’re interested in it at all you should give it a shot, as there are some good performances here from a great cast, but I guess it just didn’t resonate with me that much. Definitely scary. 3 stars
The Grey – This one was also weird, but in that I didn’t like it right after I saw it, but the more I thought about it, the more I liked it. Good performances, kind of a beating – I just liked the whole animal side of it. The poem recited really sort of stuck with me, and I absolutely loved the way it ended. Make sure you stay after the credits because I didn’t think the ending could get better, but it definitely did. 3 1/2 stars
The Descendants – I was surprised by this one. To me, it kinda ended the way I thought it would, but again, great performances and a good story. The quirky side of the humor didn’t seem to fit, although it was probably needed, because the story could get bogged down in the somber feel of it. Cool seeing George play against type – he’s normally so damn cool, but here he was kind of a loser. And the older daughter from the “Oh shit I’m pregnant in high school” show – she’s normal-looking enough that I could see her playing the girl next door type of roles. Cutie pie. 3 1/2 stars
Tower Heist – I wanted to hate this because Brett Ratner is a shitty mcfuckin’ shithead, but it really wasn’t terrible. It wasn’t good, either, let me make that clear. Eddie Murphy – he hasn’t made a really good movie in forever, but I still find him to be pretty likable, and I wish he would quit doing shit movies. Ben Stiller – this dude’s just sort of broken. I don’t know what’s wrong with him, but I just don’t like him that much. He should go back to just doing supporting roles, because I tire of seeing his face. I like Casey Affleck a lot, but he should also stick to supporting roles, as he did here. Matthew Broderick – I give the guy a lot of credit because he’s fucking Ferris Bueller, and I liked him in WarGames (shit movie really, but it was one of my childhood faves) and even watched the shit out of Project X when I was younger. But I don’t know what’s wrong with him, either – he just seems out of place in everything I’ve seen him in. Could be because he’s gotten so chunky and gray but he’s still kinda got a baby face, I don’t know. And Gaboray Sibodubabumaychicookiemonster – I actually like her a lot. She’s got good comedic timing and shit, but how many movies really call for a morbidly obese super black girl? (I say “super black” with all due respect, although she’s not Yaphet Kotto or Bill Duke super black. What is it with those two, anyway ? I’ve loved both of them in every movie I’ve ever seen them in, so where the hell are they?) Oh, yeah, the movie – kind of a big meh. I stopped caring what happened, because I knew that somehow it would all work out, so as soon as the caper shit actually started, all of the interesting character shit was over and I checked out. 2 1/2 stars

Participanti think the best and worst thing about Contagion is how realistic it is. doesn’t make for a great movie but really is creepy (with the breakdown of society as you mentioned).

ParticipantSome of your ratings got all weird on the early pages of this thread Rob, I think because they were smileys and the new forum doesn’t have smileys. Or maybe I just have them un-enabled. There’s no way to tell unfortunately, I’m not a doctor.
But, more importantly, have you seen Rango, How To Train Your Dragon or Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs?

ParticipantI think it must be that smileys are not enabled. No matter what, it is a conundrum of epic proportions.
I’ve seen Rango and Cloudy. Rango was a three star, and I don’t remember Cloudy very well, but it was okay.

ParticipantRango was a nice break (visually) from Pixar and Dreamworks . I liked that they went with more photo-real textures for all the critters.
I gave Cloudy extra points for its classic sci-fi horror tone. (and certainly not because of Bruce Campbell and Mr. T)
Did you finally watch How to Train Your Dragon, Bucho? One of my favs.
