ParticipantWe loved Brick and liked Brothers Bloom, right? Well, I did.
And we like a nice sci-fi thing, maybe with some time travel and guns and Joseph Gordon Levitt, right? Right.
Here’s the trailer for Looper then.

ParticipantYou’ve seen Brick? You? Mr. “never gets around to watching anything”?
I enjoyed it.

KeymasterBonus points for driving an NA Miata too… (@0:18, @0:40). Emily Blunt is showing up in too damn many movies lately… she is just funny looking to me. Acting doesn’t really blow me away either.
But… the movie looks supremely awesome. I’m going to travel into the future to watch it right n-n-n-now.

ParticipantI’ve only seen Emily Blunt in The Adjustment Bureau I think, which wasn’t the best film ever but I thought she was really good in it, which makes me think she could be good in Looper too since they’re both movies about people who breath oxygen. I especially the chemistry between her and Matt Damon was great in that movie, which I think outdid any cinematic romantic pairing I’ve seen for the last couple of years.
Except Justin Timberlake and Ashton Kutcher in Fuck Buddies, or whatever that movie about banging your friends was. Or was that Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis? All pretty people look the same to me.

ParticipantIf I could kill me from the future, I would. Also, if me from the past tried to kill me today, I’d run away. This film is just too damned obvious!

ParticipantOri you spoiling SOB!
Meanwhile, Johnson did this fun little trailer commentary for it. It’s fun and little and a commentary.

i think the key artistic intent is the desaturated colors. the lack of color highlights the juxtaposition of the homoerotic gestures with the lifeless porcelain dog; hard and motionless with its phallic-like head rising in mockery of the obviously impotent riders. this gif is a classic example of the internal struggle of id, ego and super-ego.

KeymasterYeah, I get all that… I just didn’t get it’s placement here in this thread. I’m a simpleton.

oh, i completely agree. no place in this thread. we already know this forum is an amalgamation of homoerotic energy. it’s like one big suppressed gay orgy.

ParticipantFinally caught it last night. There’s nothing mind-blowing in it aside from a great performance by a 5 year old kid, but there are a few very fun set pieces which I won’t talk about at this point in case y’all haven’t seen it yet and Jeff Daniels is awesome and hilarious in his 10 minutes of screen time. Overall it doesn’t quite hold up to its promise but it’s still a fun enough ride and certainly more interesting than your average blockbuster.
The time travel mechanics are fuzzy and actually, like with Terminator or Back To The Future, the math behind them doesn’t really don’t matter. They’re ultimately far less important or interesting than the internal moral battles these characters are engaged in. But the characterization isn’t really strong enough to make those moral battles feel like they matter either. Some of the action and world building feels a little undercooked too, but not enough to ruin the movie in any way.
I realise this is kind of a wishy washy response, but it feels like kind of a wishy washy film.

ParticipantStrange that you put it that way. I thought it was really really good, but just short of greatness. Like, Inception, for example, got inside my brain, kinda like those slimy things they put in the ears in Wrath of Khan for a couple of weeks, and I couldn’t get it out of my head. Not this one.
But still, I think I had less problems with it than you did.
