Ol’ Ben
ParticipantSo I’m rebuilding my SOS collection because I had a mix of downloaded files and podcast episodes and wanted them all organized for my ipod, and I was wondering, where are the shows coming from when I download them from iTunes? Does Brian have them hosted or does iTunes have them in a bittorrent style layout? Just an interesting question that came to mind. (It is also saying some shows aren’t able to be downloaded, but they play through the feed so I think that is my client issue)
I’m also wondering who here has the highest tally of listening to the show? If I were to count up single listens I’d imagine it would be into a thousand. I have a groundbreaking minimum of 5 listens through the entirety of show 75. You may think that is crazy but I get that large of a number because while I’m doing computer work, If I hit one of the show 75 episodes, I begin at #1 then go through them as a series based on hits through shuffle (it is a pretty interesting system)
So post here on your estimated/known tally of switched-on listens!

ParticipantWow. For some reason, reading this touched me right in the feels. Seriously. I’ve said it before, but as fun as the show is to do, I always found it extremely rewarding to hear that people really enjoyed what we did, and maybe even got some people out of some bad days. Thanks for sharing that!

ParticipantYou got me beat Ben, I’ve listened to each episode, including the entirety of 75, at least twice but 1000 individual listens is a ton. I remember there was one fan, who Robby mentioned recently on his solo show, who had listened to every episode 3 or 4 times or something, and would start back at #1 every time he got back to the most recent episode.
If I hold any record it’s that I’ve probably listened to episodes 30a and 30b, 37 and at least 20 times, and episode 93 (which the boys always wrongly considered one of their duller shows but which actually has one of the best Star Wars conversations in the history of history) something like 35-40 times, because those were the shows I took with me to Brazil on my tiny cheap mp3 player. I think I only had a total of 12 or 15 different podcast episodes from different podcasts so they’d get re-listened to a bunch and the SOS eps would be listened to even more than the others I had on there. I probably would have listened to them even more if Robby hadn’t begun to do his solos which gave me something else to occupy listening time.

ParticipantI’ll add that except for new shows I don’t explicitly listen to everything too closely. I usually throw SOS on when I’m trying to debug a couple thousand lines of code or am wanting something to listen to at night.
My specific shows would probably be 41, 72, 75, 84, episode IV podcast (I love to listen to it because I know the movie from start to finish and can “watch along” anywhere), then 141/143 (I started to listen around 140’s when I first found Switched on) I listened to the twisted pickle religiously before I found switched on, and even did my own show back in 2005 or something ridiculous like that.
And Rob, if people don’t enjoy what you do they ought to be shot, I can honestly say you guys are objectively funny, but most people get put off by the length of the show. Everyone wants that instant hilarity or something stupid.
Think of switched on like a big series of novels, you’ll miss some little things if you don’t read every page but you could pick up one randomly from the collection and enjoy it because they are not fully dependent on one another, know what I mean?

KeymasterI can’t listen to me talk enough to what you guys do. Not ever ever.
I talk a damn lot.

ParticipantThe show will be 9 years old this year, right? That is a lot of talking Brian, you need to tone it down a bit.
EDIT: I guess you already had your ninth birthday, my mistake. Happy birthday!

ParticipantDo you listen to any of the solo shows Ben? If you haven’t yet then latest one from Robby is especially worth checking out since he yaps about a ton of Star Wars and it’s always fun when any of these lads yaps about Star Wars.

ParticipantI think I’ve only listened to each episode once with a select few more than that. When I first found SoS way back I was marathoning the old episodes, usually as many as I could in a single day.
To answer your initial question, as long as the process hasn’t changed much since I’ve hosted a podcast years ago, the files are stored on your own server and podcast section of iTunes just pulls from an RSS feed directly from your server.

KeymasterI forgot to answer that… True. They should all be here on this server, so if you have trouble with one let me know and I’ll fix it.

ParticipantOk. It was an issue with parallel downloading in iTunes. Sorry for sucking all the bandwidth 😀 And I have listened to some of Rob’s stuff from 2009 but I’ll make a note to add his feed or download, however he distributes his medium. -See related post in solo shows

ParticipantHi Ben,
I’m equally excited to know that you like our stuff so well. The show was 8 years old this passed February.
I remember when we first started recording the shows at ‘the lot’, Bryan would bounce the track down and I would put it on my little iPod Mini (back in the day). Though we just finished doing the show, I would listen to it on the drive back home. Those shows were not so long in the beginning. I made show notes at some point where I had listened to the shows again. Later I started to listen to them all again from the beginning after it had been a couple of years. I don’t think I ever got any further than the 90-100s range on second hearings.
So, for me…
(shows 0 thru 90ish) 2-3 times
(shows 90ish thru 150ish) 1-2 times
(shows after 150ish) 0-1 times
Best of clips 100s of timesSometimes, I like to just go back and randomly select a show and just cue myself to a random spot in the show.
I like titties.
