Okay, so my personal GMail account I never, ever give out to people I don’t know and I have a dummy email address for stuff I know I have to sign up for where they’ll send me spam.
That being said, has anyone else noticed more and more spam in your GMail spam folder over the past little bit?
Yeah, it runs in waves. But if you use it for stuff to send spam too, remember some of those are opt-in email campaigns (read the fine print) and some of those are allowed to sell your address to it’s “partners” and such. Those things you have to agree to sometimes are a real pain the ass. There are also automated ways of generating possible email addresses and blasting to everything in hopes of hitting an actual address. with it being gmail, you’d only see the sucesses.
Are you sure you haven’t given it out or posted even once. It only took me a minute to find it, apparently because some bot already found it and harvested it over at http://www.spamupnewmanswazoo.com
What you’ll find is that if you use an e-mail address that looks normal (ala djohnson@gmail.com) you’ll get tons of spam because the spammers use algorithms to deduce e-mail addresses that are likely to work. An interesting experiment would be to open a gmail account like 74826dj@gmail.com. I’ll bet you find that you get almost zero spam in that case.
Of course, like all good security measures, it makes it a very difficult to use e-mail address… 😉
The spam-catcher for gmail has always always been so good at catching crap, but yes, I’ve had the same exact problem just starting recently with spam in my inbox. I’m getting the same thing, so I wonder what it is exactly that’s going on?
