ParticipantGuillermo Del Toro’s been off the scene for aaaaaaaaaaages it seems like. I guess this is what he decided to do once he bailed out of The Hobbit.

ParticipantYeah, what? What exactly was this? And why do I want to see it?

KeymasterCould go either way… but I’m interested enough.

ParticipantI really like how clear the action is. After Transformers with the messy designs and fight choreography it’s fun to see a giant robit that looks like a giant robit and to be able to fully take in the dynamics of their movements. I especially like how much weight these behemoths seem to have. CGI has long struggled with giving things their proper heft and I love how slow these things move in this trailer. There seems to be real inertia happening. Also like Edris Alba.
Hate the opening voice-over though and it completely killed the trailer for me the first time I watched it. Sounds like a bad anime dub or something. Or just a bad accent. Or both. If that’s the main actor and I have to hear it for the whole film it’s going to be a problem.

ParticipantIt looks, dare I say, epic. And I like del Toro enough to wanna give it a shot.

ParticipantThere are no spoilers in this clip except for a confirmation of me hating Charlie Hunnam’s accent. Even Idris Alba’s swings across the Atlantic in this clip. Bummer.

ParticipantSaw this last night. Like all of Del Toro’s movies there’s some literally AWESOME world-building, but the character and story stuff is lacking, so it’s kind of a lovable, good-natured mess.
And yeah, Charlie Hunnam’s accent sucks really badly.

ParticipantYeah, I’ve pretty much realized that this movie’s probably not for me. I keep reading things about the person watching it being in love with the big monster movies like Godzilla and Gamera and Vagrethra and if you’re too critical already about the trailer then you probably won’t like it. I’ll probably wait until it’s out of theaters to see.

ParticipantThe one argument for seeing it in theatres is that its strengths are in the visual and aural. It’s the biggest film in a long time in terms of scale and spectacle. I don’t remember another film which rumbled so deep and so loud it made my seat shake. The beasts and the hardware are the best thing since … Jurassic Park and Star Wars? I mean, fuck Avatar for cinematic sci-fi spectacle is what I’m saying, Pacific Rim is HUUUUUUUUUGE, and the world is so much more interestingly constructed, but you are really big on story and character and it falls down pretty hard on those so I don’t see any way it doesn’t end up pissing you off. I mean, speaking of Avatar, I ragged on Sam Worthington as a boring lead but he may as well be DDL next to Charlie Fucking Hunnam.

ParticipantSee, that’s the thing – I think that the big spectacle stuff CAN be really cool, but most of the time it’s big and stuff to try to distract you from thinking about the poor story and character stuff. Here, it seems that the spectacle is really the whole point of the movie, so I may be able to look past that. It really just comes down to filmmaker prowess, and it’s a touchy balance. I’ve definitely enjoyed del Toro’s stuff before, so I don’t know.

ParticipantIt’s kind of like Avatar and Prometheus for me in that the spectacle kicked my ass but the characterization and narrative fell short, so it’s really pretty much a big screen experience only. I didn’t see it in IMax or 3D but I did see it in Xtreme Screen and it was pretty huge.
Having said that though, you have a kick-ass home system that may well do it justice.

ParticipantI saw Pacific Rim last night and the friends who I went with all liked it very much, as did I. My only complaint was the very much forced “comedy” bits, I thought they were super cheesy and hardly warranted a chuckle, I think even one of the I sighed and facepalmed. I can totally agree with what you are saying about the lack of characterization and narrative but something like this I go in expecting a big budget mayhem fest and that is exactly what I felt like I was given.
Also while most people would want their own gundam after seeing it, I think I want an alien vagina more so. lol

ParticipantWhoa, whoa, whoa…nobody said shit about an alien vagina. I might have to go see it now.
