I really don’t care about the price, as long as I can get something that’s going to serve me for the whole purpose. I would rather have better than what I need than settling for something that’s below par for what i need.

This is a pretty good answer. May I suggest Juniper? Here is a decent performing switch, and a good performing router to round things out. You won’t be quite a portable, but you won’t have any performance woes.

Or much time to use it with the 12 jobs you will be holding down to pay for it. 😀

nice little 8-port cisco small business router for $200.

This is actually a pretty decent choice. You should see some good sustainable performance off of this one. Especially for the price. I’d be interested in the reviews for it.

Sounds like something I said at a sensual massage “parlor”.

You said you were working late!!!

Seriously though, if price were really not a concern, I would recommend Juniper, there were products in the $600 range that will work for just about anything you could ever hope to throw at them. But it’s super overkill for a gaming rig. They are killer performers, and I’m a firm believer in the Netscreen/GT series, though I’m not exactly sure what they’ve replaced them with lately. I have a feeling they killed off the small biz products.

awesome, but i don’t think the juniper has enough ports for what he needs (only 48? laughable.) but with the PoE he can set up some cameras and let us watch the frag-fest. 🙂

    Right!

The cool thing about the Juniper appliances I’ve used for the last few years is that they have fully configurable ports. You can have 4 Untrust ports and One Trust port, allowing you to multi-home a $500 appliance. Not to mention that you can do a ridiculously finely grained policy for screening in or outbound traffic, and the VPN allows for incredibly flexible settings. We once had site to site VPN running at 1024-bit while still routing all public traffic for a bank. I have a Juniper appliance running routing duties at ‘the lot’.
