Oh, because we need them to agree with our point of view 110% before we can do the other stuff. It’s a prerequisite apparently.

That feeling you are getting is from countless hours of stroking it. Cut it back to 3 times a day, and you’ll normalize. 😛

I really think it might be because I haven’t been stroking enough.

I know that you can justify our choices as a civilization as a natural progression — I’ve just noticed that I’ve had this feeling the last, oh, 8 months or so, like I should be doing more. Like maybe I should be doing something more to advance, rather than telling people that their phone’s fucked up. This has all been a kind of rant, pointing out the hypocrisy in society, and in myself.

If medicine’s so great, why exclude anyone from it?

Instead of the billions we spend in defense, why not use it to feed, clothe, and educate the world?

There’s a bunch of reasons not to get into a political thing here, which is where this conversation inevitably heads. It’s enough that you can see how the different political (and religious) systems all follow the laws of nature, even as they seem to try to turn us from our base natures. The competitive instinct is inate and it’s almost impossible to imagine a world where everyone (or at least enough people to be a powerful majority) helps each other and considers their fellow man equals, so the best that various systems of civilization can manage is to attempt to decrease suffering and to increase survival rates.

You could look at the shit state we’re in and say there must be a better way, and I and billions of others would agree, but there are also plenty of worse ways to go about things. Most of us don’t have the power to affect things on a greater scale, but if you start with number one I’d say it’s one step up from being that drone you seem to be fearing you’ll become. Our instinct to advance and be creative is what’ll stop us from being that and our instinct to want to help to make things better for others is what’ll stop us from being one of those unevolved head-up-their-own-ass types that do nothing but take.

I don’t know if what you’re getting at is self-improvement in career terms or working out your philanthropist muscles or both but if you start with the small stuff the bigger stuff doesn’t seem so hopeless. I guess I stopped this going political but come dangerously close to being one of those slogan spouting motivational gimps. Fuck it, you go after what you want dude, and don’t be afraid of all that seemingly dorky stuff like writing down short, mid and long term goals either. There’s a thread that runs through a lot of our generation that it seems uncool to have ambitions, that the slacker thing is more respectable and wanting to better yourself is lame. Then one day you notice the guy who’s twenty years older than you and is working a similar dead end job and you see your future self in him and realise that slacker stuff is a fucking lameass con and you need to put some things in motion to give your future self a break.

I don’t know where this ends Rob, or even if it’s what you’re getting at but like I told Jerry when he mentioned he’s taking care of himself and getting in better shape, if you want to make yourself better in any way then good shit dude and may the force be with you, it’s an impressive thing. Or to put it another way, what would Trent do?

Heheh — it’s more of a self-motivating thing. I don’t always want to be the guy on the sideline saying that it’s wrong, I’d rather lead by example. It’s just a matter of how I’ll do it.

I’ve never been good at making goals. I stay happier living in the moment. And as annoying that may be for my wife, she loves me for it, because it brings a spontaneity to her life she’s never had. Shit, that may be how we work, since we don’t get along religiously.

Who knows? All I know is that I’ve been trying to tree this thought, this feeling. And talking it out has helped.

That’s cool dude, but it’s not like they’re mutually exclusive, having a dream or two doesn’t normally damage anyone’s natural sense of spontaneity. It’s probably more likely that you’ll get to a goal if you allow for your natural inclinations when you set them, plus the new situations you find yourself in provide more scope for whatever sets your sense of humor off.

I have to stop now, I sound like some cheeseball wannabe life coach. Everyone should just do whatever makes them happy as long as it’s not a slow-motion path to regret and as long as they’re not lying to themselves or hurting anyone else. And as long as they realise Jarvis Cocker is dead right when he sings Cunts Are Still Running The World.

    Oh shit, that’s political.
