Remember when there were two Wyatt Earp movies the same year? And when there were two volcano films? And that time two asteroid movies came out so close to each other?

    Now it’s fuck buddies’ turn.

just 2 more excuses for hollywood to blame piracy for lack of revenue.

I really can’t stand that thing where studios have to have a movie of the same type, and try to beat each other to the concept. It always always results in a crap movie, and often is an answer to a crap movie. It would be great if in many cases they were competing with (or ended up creating) a fantastic movie… but that’s not the case. This two studios with the similar stories going to production at nearly the same time happens incredibly often.

Yeah, I always wondered how much of it is by design and how much is coincidence. This one seems like an obvious romcom concept that I’m surprised hasn’t been done before. I think Despicable Me and Megamind is another current example, but I haven’t seen either yet.

The exception to the rule I can think of is Capote, which was mirrored by Infamous (which I haven’t seen), and was a pretty good movie. I like the megasilliness of Armageddon too although I’ve never seen Deep Impact.

one thing i’ll say about deep impact is that it had really good casting overall. other than that it basically just groomed the American psyche to prepare for our first black president.

i don’t think it was all that bad. it was just more character driven than armageddon’s core motif of American cowboy bruce willis vs. the evil asteroid from outer space as they battle to their inevitable mutual destruction.

Yeah, the Lark pretty much has it. I think Deep Impact better represents the type of approach our government might take with something like like that… and I think it’s a better movie. But I can definitely see why it lost out at the box office. Maybe they should have found a place for Steve Buchemi in Deep Impact… that would’ve fixed it, right?

haha yeah, that’s exactly it! besides, how weird would it be to have one of these “movie pairs” share an actor?

I bet Mila and Natalie were trash talking the shit out of each other on the set of White Swan too. I bet they almost came to blows. Maybe they even wrestled at some point.

they probably dove into some nearby oil to work out their aggression in their underwear. I think that’s the most likely scenario.

Damn it, I meant Black Swan. But you knew that.

And I definitely think oil was involved too. There’s no way it wasn’t.

And I don’t know if either of these movies is going to be watchable but the Portman/Kutcher trailer looks more palatable to me than the Mila/JT one, and I sat that even as someone who enjoys Mila and JT. Seems like he might be out of his depth as a lead actor though.

–and on this subject, Sony Pictures has their alien invasion movie “Battle:Los Angeles” URL=”http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/sony_pictures/battlelosangeles/”%5Dtrailer%5B/URL and then universal has “Skyline” coming as well URL=”http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/universal/skyline/”%5Dtrailer%5B/URL.

Neither look like particularly good films, but Skyline looks like it at least had a unique idea first. Hey, at least we live in an age where the special effects are beginning to get past “look at me, I’m special effects!!!” a bit, and now we are seeing movies that have CG that just looks real to allow filmmakers to do things they couldn’t do before. It may not make a great movie, but they are starting to look like they were actually filmed to an extent.

Apparently Skyline is some kind of accidental comedy.

bummer. i was looking forward to it.

speaking of the “movie pairs” thing, i’ve seen another trailer for an alien movie called monsters that looks interesting.
