Okay, I have a new G5, OSX 10.4.3 Mac here at work. Now, I’m trying to install software on it, but I can’t because the bastard IT people have put on an admin password, so I can’t. Is there any way around this?.
I dont think so. I think that is the reason macs are more secure than windows computers, you do need admin level access to install certain types of programs. But I am sure Bryan will be along shortly to give a more informed answer.
Yes, but they are going to know you did it. You can use the Tiger setup disc to fix the admin/root password… but they will certainly know you did. Are they experienced Mac admins? if not, ask them to open up local admin rights to you. You could also drop a keylogger on the machine and have them log on to do something minor for you.
Correct me if I’m worng Bryan, but couldnt you install the software on another Mac that you do have admin access to, then just copy the folder from the Applications folder onto your work Mac?
Depends on the application. So many of them need files added to the Application support folder in the Library that it might not necessarily work. If that’s the case, I’m pretty sure you will not have access to add/change files in that folder.
I’m looking for a cheap laptop to accompany my mac pro (if I ever get it). Do you think a G3 iBook would be sufficent for internet browsing and watching movies on flights once I max out the ram, new hard drive and one of those spiffy extended batteries. I just dont want to pay out of the ass for something I use in class or on the go sometimes. I mean why pay all that money for a g4 powerbook when a macbook is more than capable of handling the majority of the task better? It’s between a G3 iBook or a G4.
