As someone who considers himself an armchair comedian, I found that fascinating. I could have listened to those guys talk for hours. My favorite is definitely Louis, as he’s just fuckin’ awesome.
I hope Gervais puts a few more of them together too. I’d also love to see him sit down with non standup comedy people like Judd Apatow and Will Ferrell and Tina Fey.
Or even better, have Louis sit down with those people.

KeymasterOr even better, have them stand up together (on a set with no chairs), and talk about how they’ve never done stand-up.

ParticipantI spent some time yesterday on catching up with his show, “Louie”, and I really like it a lot. I’m surprised at how much you can get away with saying on FX. I’ll definitely be adding that to my DVR’d shows from now on.

ParticipantHe had a great chat with Marc Maron on the WTF podcast. It’s in two parts and I think you have to pay for those episodes now because they’re more than six months old, but if you’re an armchair comedy nerd Maron’s show is awesome and his chats with his old buddy Louis are great.

KeymasterCharging for back episodes?
May 24, 2011 at 9:24 am #25236Bucho
ParticipantIt’s one of the ways some people are going to try to make their podcasts at least pay for themselves. The big guns in this game pay massive amounts in bandwidth costs alone long before they even think about making any kind of profit. Adam Carolla for example was paying $10,000 a month right from the start and he’s grown continually so I’m guessing he pays at least double that these days. Maron isn’t at that level but he’s become one of the big guns of podcasting too and he didn’t start out owning a garage full of lambos like Carolla did. I have no idea if putting the back catalogue in a store is better than the other income earning methods podcasters are trying but if money comes in each time data goes out at least he covers the cost of those particular downloads I guess.
It’s still kind of a Wild West in terms of the economics of the pro side of the game and no one model has become the standard yet. The model Maron is using bets that new listeners will try a couple of the recent free episodes, then download the other 50 free ones and then be so hooked they’re happy to shell out a buck or two for some older episodes, some of which feature favorite names in comedy.
I mean, there are free episodes up there right now with guests like Conan O’Brien, Gary Shandling, Bobcat Goldthwaite, Gallagher, Joe Rogan, Bill Hader, Patton Oswalt … and a lot of these guys are comics Marc has a history with because he’s a seasoned comic himself, so there are fun behind the scenes stories aplenty going on in there. Then you go back to hear Marc get down and dirty with joke thieves like Dane Cook and Carlos Mencia, giants like Apatow, Ben Stiller and Robin Williams, geniuses like Louis CK and Greg Giraldo and Dave Atell and delights such as Sarah Silverman and Maria Bamford.
The dude isn’t perfect by any means, but he’s wildly entertaining if you’re a comedy nerd.

ParticipantMy love for Louis/Louie is ever-growing.

p.s. Didn’t we have a thread on here yapping about the way he sold his last special? I can’t find it. Maybe I dreamed the whole thing.

ParticipantI could’ve sworn we had talked about that, too, but I can not find it, either. Maybe it was lost in the swarm of pissyshit of ’68. Or maybe I’m just retarded. Either way, Louis C.K. has to be my favorite comic working today. Let’s see – Tosh, Bill Burr – yeah, Louis is still king.

KeymasterWe talked about it, but on a different thread. Let me see if I can find that… nope. Obviously we did talk about the 5 dollar downloader, because we all remember it. I’m actually wondering if Rob and I talked about it on one of those long as movie dork out shows that we did without Jerry… maybe that’s where it is.

ParticipantGaffigan’s just done a similar thing last week and I think Aziz Ansari might have too. To be honest I don’t know for sure, I’m not a registered physician and there’s no other way to tell. But it seems like this distribution method is catching on pretty good with established comics.

ParticipantI used to be a pretty big fan of Gaffigan, and he still says some funny stuff, but his shtick has tired me out.
April 20, 2012 at 7:52 pm #25221Version3
KeymasterAnd not a moment too soon… it was tired for me when you and Jerry used to quote and chat through. I remember him pretty well from before this last resurgence of his in the last few years. He’s been doing that same thing for 20 years.
BTW: who the fuck really thinks Aziz Ansari is funny? He’s not funny, he’s a gimmick. All he does is tell stories about being close to pop culture and typical mediocre drug/sex/dick joke stuff. He’s a little better in a role, but as a standup he’s just a question mark.

as a fellow South Carolinian i must apologize for giving the world Ansari.
personally i dislike no comedian more than Russel Brand. i want to punch him fervently in his duodenum.
My essence still senses Bucho's women.

KeymasterOh so we are calling Brand a comedian now? Are we at least putting little quote fingers in the air when we say this?
I knew AA was from SC, that’s why I labeled him as a gimmick. I feel like I’m about to go on a tirade about this again… I have shit to do.

ParticipantI find Russell Brand’s standup unwatchable but he can be fun in movies and as a radio host/podcaster or interviewee he’s superb. I don’t know if I’ve ever heard Aziz’s standup (outside of his character in Funny People) but he’s always fun in movies too and easily one of the funniest people in Parks and Recreation. Although that ain’t saying much – for as much talent as they have on screen in that show the writing is generally sub-par.
