ParticipantBlack Swan
not a bad movie, but i didn’t like the story. definitely my least favorite of aronofsky’s films. too similar to the wrestler (which was to be expected since apparently they were both one movie at one time that eventually “diverged in a wood” or something).
i think you can split a movie’s chronology (e.g. back to the future 2 & 3, the matrix 2 & 3, kill bill 1 & 2) but not a movie’s core story arcs. i think the two movies together could have been a very interesting juxtaposition of the two roles. but as it stands, i’m disappointed. aronofsky is one of my favorite directors and we get a movie from him so rarely (it seems) that it just feels like a wasted opportunity.
i wish there had been more of a horror/supernatural element to the movie so as to further distinguish it from the wrestler. black swan isn’t a bad movie and the ballets scenes are beautifully shot and tremendously complex but it just wasn’t what i was hoping for.
The Adjustment Bureau
loved it. not the best movie in the world but i enjoyed the story. i think i enjoy most of the film adaptations of philip k. dick’s stories. plus it has Terrence Stamp.
it reminded me eternal sunshine of the spotless mind which i also loved. i guess i’m just an old softy when it comes to the “love conquers all” motif.
good movie to see with the wife (or equivalent) but not by yourself or with the guys.
Source Code
fantastic sci-fi movie. it moves at a nice pace even though you’re going through the same eight minute interval. dramatically different pacing than moon but no surprise there.
this movie takes a very old concept we’ve seen in sci-fi for years but presents it in a very interesting way and reveals just enough as it progresses to hold your interest through to an ending that is… well let me just say it’s a good sci-fi ending. 🙂
when we left the movie my wife asked a question about the movie and i had to give her a very simple summary of the quantum universe. and i couldn’t have been happier. not happy that i had to explain it to her but happy that the movie had the guts to gloss over the concepts (the movie makes no attempts at scientific accuracy but it’s the concepts that are of interest) and not spend half of the movie with trite exposition about quantum ideas that are used in the movie.
i can definitely recommend source code to any level of sci-fi fanatic.

ParticipantI think Adjustment Bureau is pretty ropey in terms of storytelling and plotholes but it’s worth watching just for the two lead performances from Mathew Damon and Emily Blunt.
And really glad to hear you liked Source Code. Can’t wait for it to come out here, particularly because I want to bone Michelle “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang” Monaghan until her worlds collide. Also, Duncan Jones seems like a pretty great director.

ParticipantDuncan Jones is definitely one to watch. I can’t wait to see what he does next. Two movies with characters in constrained environments. Between that and being David Bowie’s son, it would make for a good psych 101 paper.

I thought this was a movie about what you do when your underwear bunches up.

KeymasterI enjoyed Source Code pretty well. I don’t like Jake very much… he just never becomes anyone for me. But, the idea for this movie was good, very entertaining, cool enough without having to get all effects crazy on things, light enough to not have to fuck it up with stupid scientific bullshit to try to support the tech (mentioned already to an extent).
I was annoyed about one part of it though… no sure if I should get into it as it would likely be a spoiler.

the stupid txt at the end? or the idea that he’s just going to magically be able to effortlessly fit into that guy’s life/mind that he just “took over”?My essence still senses Bucho's women.

KeymasterNo, my problem is… (keep in mind that what I hate about movies is when they senselessly break the apparent rules or common sense rules of the universe they create), here is a guy who is smart enough to hook a computer up to a nearly dead guy’s brain, and use that connection to tune into residual memories of another brain, then use THAT information to navigate the alternate versions of the universe to a version that has not yet branched at the point of arrival of our hero character… -then why the fuck is he not smart enough to understand that for infinite universes you actually CAN’T dictate that 1) his arrival any time they send him back to the point of branching (it becomes a different universe the moment he navigates these ‘echos’) is actually representative of an alternate universe, one that does not guarantee that the person who set the events in motion is the same as the ending events in all cases, since infinite means not only infinite branching, but also infinite merges of the timeline -as in someone else (and ultimately, everyone else including our host character) could have set the bomb up resulting in the same explosion, giving them no assurance that they are seeing the events that actually affected THEIR timeline. But mainly 2) The idea that scientist aware of any of this would actually believe that the outcomes of his version of the universe were somehow more important than the outcomes of the other is stupid. Stupid. His life wasn’t in danger, so self preservation wouldn’t have come into play to affect his need to put the success of his program above the needs and outcomes of the affected universe. In fact, he would have recognized that by continuing to send out Capt back, and allowing him to save whoever the fuck he wanted would firstly, give the guy the satisfaction that he was craving, secondly, increase the chances that they guy would see the value of the program, and submit to being a magic time-mule for however long he could and thirdly, would have seeded the existences of other universes. In fact, you’d think he’d recognize that there is a universe where he made each of the two possible decisions, and more that did not come to light. To the point that his head might have exploded. In fact, the fact that I’m focused on this not being possible, then saying it’s not only all possible, but it’s all actually happening in a universe somewhere contradicts what I’m saying, and it just annoys me.
But basically, trying not to get too deep into the multiverse, his behavior, and degree of control once other versions of the universe was introduced was not consistent with a scientist character, and there is no apparent reason for it.
I would have been happier by him skirting the issue, and just saying that it’s an echo, and nothing he does matter, and he’d never get the call (instead of saying another version of him did). By not introducing any scientific principal, we’d be just as likely to assume he was less competent, or even the “business mind”, then I could better accept the “oh, it was an alternate reality he affected, and stupid cripple fuck didn’t even know it!” kind of outcome. By introducing it, they basically decided to dip into the “inventor’s” vast knowledge on the subject, only to make him an unimaginative idiot on the subject, for no reason at all. It’s a dumb move, and it stuck out from that moment on.
It just annoys me.
As for your two guesses, the text thing is exactly what I’d expect from a movie made for most audiences that’s not too Sci-Fi, and the fitting into his life they sort of take a step back from by making it apparent that they are acquaintances by way of the commute only, and she doesn’t have to know him well enough to call him on it by the end of the movie, much less their immediate happy future. The science that ignores the scientist is just stupid.
Yes, there is really a shitload of text there, and one insane run-on sentence. Read it as though I never take breath.

and toward the end of the final 8 minutes the girl had some kind of “glitch” that made it look like they were in a computer simulation or something.i still really enjoyed it, but if you’re going to make a soft sci-fi movie you need to stay away from hard sci-fi concepts.
perfect example of the right way to do it is primer. they explained the rules of using the time machine but stayed away from the “how”.
source code was all over the place. is it an ‘echo’? then how can he experience people and events beyond the perception of the ‘host’? then that leads to the multiverse angle which you covered.
when you’re dealing with a good director you have to assume everything is intentional. so maybe the black dude wasn’t giving the author’s POV of the technology. it’s not a very good storytelling device but would explain some of the inconsistent or contradictory ideas.
and why are you still reading this? look! boobies!
