on windows, when i wanted to cycle through the [YES] [NO] [CANCEL] [OK] [END] buttons, i just used the Tab key.

i’m almost into year 3 of my mac conversion and i just now had an alert dialogue where it would have been convenient to use the keyboad and not the trackpad to do this:

i learned all kinds of shortcuts that do other things while experimenting, but not this one.

help from anyone is welcome, but i know the Captain must know how to do this?

    You have to enable it.

System Preferences >> Keyboard >> Keyboard Shortcuts

At the bottom, you probably have the radio button for “Text boxes and lists only” selected… change it to “All controls” and you’ll be set.
