Wait … so you like BB King so much but his music doesn’t reach on in and tickle your nethers? I’m not a big fan of King myself but I’m not following you here.

Heh. Sorry Lark old buddy, but I deny that very thing. Even though I’ve read that saga twice I find his language to be a pile of ass. For me his real strength is his imagination in terms of world-building. That’s what I always thought was the reason that saga blew up so big. That and the fact there was an explosion of dirty hippies not long after it was published who loved the flowery language and the black and whiteness of the morality.

ParticipantWatching b.b. king is very entertaining but putting on headphones and listening to jimmy page is magic. I can listen to b.b. In the car. I can listen to Zeppelin in the car. But I’m only going to listen to a live recording of “dazed and confused” alone with headphones and with nothing else going on.
As for Tolkien, i know a lot of people don’t care for his writing style. But the reason his world of middle-earth is so compelling is because of his literary skill. There’s a ton of details in the books but they are still very easy reads. The rich universe and accessibility to a younger audience is what has kept the stories alive for so long.

ParticipantAs far as Tolkien goes, toy are just talking about the Hobbit and LOTR, right? Because reading the Silmarillion was like reading the Bible for me. It made me feel stupid, and I put it down after 5 pages.

ParticipantWait, are you saying you are too stupid for THE BIBLE?
Dude they got churches all over with “special” rooms so the ‘tards can hear the Message, shit somedembitches even build whole faiths around the ‘tards….what about those poison drinking, snake holding, toothless believers, they can read it. (seems like)
So yeah, I’m pretty sure you have the mental sperm count for the job, but fuck reading Tolkien, anything that long is going to take a huge span of time and will occupy so much of my leisure time that I might start speaking in elf and go leaping into the dark abyss of insanity with all my invisible friends and my shiny new straight jacket.
or I could read the Bible and anything that long….wait
I don’t read.

Participanttaking your literacy skills into account, let me just clarify something, bing. don’t read is not the same thing as can’t read.
you’re welcome.

Looks like we’re not going to agree on this one. I think he created a great world and a neat story and some easy characters and that’s what people engage with, but the storytelling itself isn’t premier league stuff. He could have done with a good editor.
On the other hand we agree on Page and SRV, and that means more to me.
