KeymasterPlease avoid this becoming about your feelings on Apple devices (pro/con), after seeing this kinda thing make the rounds on Facebook, I’m much more interested in how the SOS listeners come out on this question.
How many Apple devices do you own (in your house is appropriate)?
October 7, 2011 at 4:30 pm #30368Version3
KeymasterI’m excluding devices like Mighty/Magic mouse, because they are included peripherals with some workstations. Instead, I wanted to focus on direct-purchase oriented products.
My list is

iPod Nano (3rd gen) *Derryk
iPod 4G 30GB
iPhone
iPhone 3G
iPhone 4 16GB *Derryk
iPhone 4 32GB *Jessica
iPhone 4 32GB
iPad (16GB WiFi+3G)
Apple TV2
Apple TV2 *Derryk

Mac Mini (1.6 GHz Core Duo) *Kennyth

13″ Macbook (2008 White 2.4GHz) *Derryk
13″ Macbook Pro (2009 2.4Ghz) *Jessica
15″ Macbook Pro (2011)18 devices makes me a huge fanboy I’m sure. I’ll be adding 3 to that list next Friday, and hopefully subtracting very few.

ParticipantiPod mini sold it and bought an iPod Photo 20GB. My iPod Photo still technically works, although its better for a large USB drive/small HDD for transferring files than an MP3 player due to its seemingly short ~4hr battery life.
I’m hoping we aren’t too slow up here getting the iPhone 4G I’ll be picking one up hopefully.
That is all for me personally, but my entire office minus 2-3 machines are all mac.
An old ass black mac book (like 4″ thick), coloured eMacs, white eMacs, dancing iMacs, G4/G5 towers, G4/G5 servers, new iMacs, Mac Book, iBook, Mac Book Pro.October 7, 2011 at 9:36 pm #30373rob

1 Mac Mini

1 Time Capsule
1 Bluetooth Keyboard (for April’s iPad)
2 iPad 2s

KeymasterI didn’t include the stuff I don’t have anymore, nor did I include my bluetooth keyboard, or either of my magical mice.
Lark, you have a much bigger list than I thought you’d have!

i included all my iPods because i felt a little obligated. for the longest time, iPods were my only window into the world of AppleĀ®. i had some really tough family issues going on years ago and without getting too sappy, i can’t stress enough how much having an iPod with all of my music (and that little brick breaker game) meant.
but i tell you, man, that MacBook Air sucked me in like i couldn’t believe. it was a complete splurge for no reason other than the form factor (still had my two Windows laptops). by sheer serendipity they both died of shame over the next few years and were happily replaced.
Dammit! this was a stupid idea for a thread. if bing ever comes back we’ll all have to move so we don’t get robbed.

ParticipantSpeaking of splurges, I guess when it comes to splurging I just don’t look in the computer direction. As in, if I have an extra $500 I don’t say, “I wonder what kind of computer stuff I can get,” I say, “Ooo, I wonder what guitar and / or guitar parts and / or amplifier or guitar processor I can get.” I guess once I have a computer I’m happy with I tend to look in other directions to spend my money.

the laptops all come from income tax returns. if i have an extra $500 burning a hole in my pocket then that’s a trip to Fry’s to stock up on movies. DVDs and Blu-rays; that’s my weakness.

ParticipantHaving said all that, there are a few upgrades I want to do to my computer. Also, depending on how business goes, my company offered to buy me any kind of laptop of my choice, either Linux or Mac. Being a Linux guy I had to give it some thought, but I decided to go with the Mac because I already have Linux on my computer and use it as my day-to-day operating system and I thought it would be good to learn another operating system and expand my technical knowledge.

KeymasterIt’s a good choice to go with a Mac, because the hardware level is pretty high in general, so it will run other Operating Systems quite well. Ubuntu flies on my MBP, as does Win7. I’ve got Win7 setup for boot camp (it was called a requirement for where I work), but I never boot into it, I just run it from Parallels Desktop. It’s still pretty fast for a VM.

ParticipantEven though I doubt it, there may come a time when Linux only runs on Mac hardware. I’m not sure if you’ve heard about it, but Microsoft is trying to push a new certification system through with OEMs as part of Windows 8 so that if they want to be able to use the Windows logo as part of advertising their computers, they have to make it so the computers can only run Windows. Here’s the article:
Of course this wouldn’t effect Macs, though I think if Microsoft actually goes through with this the Linux community will probably find a way to work around it.
Edit: Just to clarify, I meant I doubt Linux would one day only be able to work on Mac hardware, not that Linux would run well on Mac hardware.
