ParticipantHas anybody else started riding a bicycle to work?
It’s about 3.784 miles from home to work, and I make the ride in about 16 minutes of riding time, actual time is more like 20 min’s due to 3 or 4 red lights.

ParticipantNope, but I’m a 15min drive from town so it’d be about an hour of riding to get there.

ParticipantIm only about 10-15 minutes by car, 15-20 mins by bike to work. I probably would bike to work, if there weren’t so many assholes willing to steal my friggin bike! 😈

KeymasterHmm… maybe I should bike. Oh wait, I do work 40 miles away. At least I bough a more fuel efficient car this year.

ParticipantI have a 15 mile revers commute and there is a bicycle path that comes nearly all the way down here. I normally ride my motorycle when the weather cooperates ’cause it has been getting about 42MPG compared the the 11 of my truck!
I have been considering beginning to ride a bike down here though since I’ve started working on becoming a runner and trying to get in shape, I think it might help. It’s supposed to be nice this week, maybe I’ll give it a try.
My only problem is that people who normally ride a bike on this trail wear their biking shirts, hats and spandex. I’m pretty sure there’s some sort of law on the books about people of my stature wearing spandex, so there’s no way in hell I’m going to do that! Would it also be a crime to wear street clothes while on a 15 mile ride?

Participant10 to 20 mintues to work. And I hop in the company’s vehicle and they pay for the gas. Meaning, I can go a week without filling up.

ParticipantThere was just a news story about high gas priced, and how people are finding a solution at local pawn shops. So I thought, oh it will be about people buying cheap bicycles and riding them to work. WRONG. The story was all about the huge rise in numbers of people pawning video games, dvd players, tools, etc to get gas money. Maybe even some people pawning their bikes to buy gas.

ParticipantIt’s all bullshit. Someone is making money. But the one thing that pisses me off is, these assholes at the gas stations (probably the decision-making jerks off-site) are raising the gas prices while the gas they got before the “crisis” is sitting in the tank, under ground.
May 4, 2006 at 4:50 pm #21424Version3
KeymasterIt’s not the gas stations… it’s MUCH farther up the chain than that. Who’s making the money? Look at the Exxon Mobile Exec that just retired and got 400 million for doing it. Imagine what his bloated salary was every year before he did retire. Let’s not forget that they inflate these prices based on the ‘today’ price of oil, even though it won’t be made into fuel for some time to come. The last per gallon hike-fest resulted in prices falling again, thereby have much less effect on projected costs for the oil companies, yet they got to keep your extra dollars and report record earnings last year.
May 4, 2006 at 5:04 pm #21441Octavious
ParticipantThats what I meant, but do you think that oil companies should be worried about jacking-up the price, 5, 10 yrs from now alternative fuels are going to come out.

ParticipantWe always get it in the butt when it comes to fuel prices, some filling stations are currently selling it at £1.20 per litre (I think thats £4.40 a gallon, $8.80 US).
I figure that when all the fuel runs out, those fuel companies and Arab investments that have bought the patents and copyrights for cars that run on water or perpetual batteries, will still make a mint from us.
We have some petrol stations over here that are selling Biodiesel, it was cheap until the government figured they could add a little bit of extra tax on that.
I can’t wait until they invent anti-gravity powered things.
If it doesn’t work, jam a screwdriver in there and jiggle it about.
May 4, 2006 at 8:08 pm #21435djohnson
ParticipantMaybe Anti-gravity is not a good idea to use as propulsion. The goverment will soon find a way to tax that. Then we’ll all be broke just paying the taxes for keeping our furniture on the floor!
May 4, 2006 at 10:09 pm #21423Version3
KeymasterYeah, I know in the UK gas is MUCH higher than it is here… but our market has fewer cars suited for that level of fuel costs, and to make matters worse, we very likely travel MUCH farther than the average commuter does over there.
I currently travel more than 80 miles per day roundtrip.
Owning the patents on stuff, ensures they can keep stalling the release of these technologies, then control them when they come out. I dread it. This whole planet really needs a coporate/government revolution.

ParticipantThey are evil. Dag nasty evil.
