I’ve been awaiting Green Lantern with cautious optimism. The trailers have been more and more confusing to me as a Green Lantern novice, and they’ve looked strangely pedestrian and almost amateurish in a way. I’ve been reading the reviews the last couple of days, and apparently it’s decorative ass-pellets.

So why would I want to see it?

Well, I think Ryan Reynolds is the fuckin’ man, that’s why. The first thing I ever saw him in was Van Wilder, and I still say that his performance there is in the top five comedic performances of the last twenty years. I know, bold statement, right? But he’s great in it. So effortlessly funny.

Anyway, so in the ramp-up for this movie, I saw the below. Now, some of you have probably already seen it, but I wanted to share in case you hadn’t.

Isn’t he the coolest? I mean, he made that kid’s LIFE. I’d be so surprised if that kid didn’t end up a geek for the rest of his life. And, it’s his reaction to seeing someone he looks up to do something so cool – it actually makes me cry.

Now, before you say, “Oh, Rob, you’re exaggerating”, or “Oh, Rob, you’re such a pussy”, let me explain. Crying is something I’ve been able to do so easily for so long. People at work didn’t believe that I can cry almost on demand, and then they asked me to. Of course, everyone was shocked when they saw it. I admit, it’s a little strange, but I’ve always been able to do it, and I’ve always “gotten into” movies, so the smallest things make me cry.

Anyway, though – even if I don’t want to sit through the festering turd that might be The Green Lantern, I almost still want to buy a ticket online for it, just to show my support for Mr. Reynolds, or as I call him, Honey Sack.

Anyway, Ryan Reynolds has been a man-crush of mine for a while, and I want to see his stuff succeed, just because he’s so damn cool.

    So, there you go.

I’m with you on the Reynolds… you knew that already. I even watched that boring run of the mill rom-com crap he did with Sandra Bullock a couple of years ago the moment I could manage it, just because I knew he’d still be awesome in it.

I have been a fan since 2 Guys a Girl and a Pizza Parlor.

    Oh Rob, you’re such a … oh.

Yeah I can’t cry on demand but I’m an easy mark even for cheap, manipulative movies. I can watch a really dumb formulaic underdog sports movie and know exactly what’s going to happen and brace myself for what’s coming but the payoff beat when the guy who’s been ridiculed and doubted and made fun of finally earns his little moment of triumph it will almost certainly punch me right in the heart.

That’s where I first saw Honey Sack too. Not just him, but Nathan Fillion was also a regular on that show. I think his only superhero role is in Dr Horrible though.

i also have a man-crush on ry-ry. kudos for him doing that for the kid.

the media monster has really been pushing Green Lantern. and at first i didn’t have interest but now after months of build and some really nice trailers (but mostly for that video rob posted) i’ll probably have to sit through it.

I guess I’m going to be the only one to disagree here. I can only take that actor seriously playing the part of a juvenile delinquent. Otherwise, he doesn’t interest me. In fact, they’ve been making a lot of movies recently with actors that I either don’t care for or don’t think fit the part very well.

I don’t think he fits any parts that aren’t his personality well… I think where I give people like RR a pass, is when they don’t try to be something they aren’t and fail.

That said, GL was watchable, but not good. I’d rather watch the more recent animated First Flight again.

I never really read the comics so I’m not sure how well this fits, but one thing that irked me from the previews is the line where he says, “Above all else, a Green Lantern must be brave.” I thought a Green Lantern was supposed to be just, or heroic, things like that… things more important than just brave. Then going along with that, I have a hard time picturing the actor in a heroic role.

i watched the other animated green lantern flick. the one before first flight and thought it was okay. of all the recent DC animated movies i think Under the Red Hood is fantastic.

That’s one of those special comic book movies, isn’t it Lark?

Yeah, Under the Red Hood was pretty good. I watched it two different times, once as a typical half pay attention while working kind of watch, then I realized it was pretty good and I should take another pass at it and actually ‘watch’ it.
