ParticipantSo yeah, I’ve been going through the ol’ SOS catalogue again and I recently listened to a show where Jerry was playing Ordinary World. I figured since you guys seem to like Duran Duran, I’d get your opinions on this. My roommates and I were prepping for a show and decided to record the session live. We are a 3-piece playing along with a sequence that we programmed, honest opinions are welcome!

ParticipantThats quite a decent cover you got going there. I do like Duran Duran…probably more than a man of my musical tastes should, but Ordinary World is not one of my favourite tracks. However, I really enjoyed your version.
BIG JOBBIESOctober 18, 2011 at 7:17 pm #30498Bucho
ParticipantSlow songs like that are always the more difficult to pull off because there’s nowhere to hide at those mopier tempos but you guys do a good job of punching it along, especially the drummer.
I don’t know if you’re the singer THX, but the place it could do with the most tweaking is the vocal. It’s not that it’s off-note at points that’s the main issue, it’s that it’s a little too far into nasal emo territory, especially in the higher register. The reason Simon Le Bon can pull off mopey tracks without sounding mopey is because he’s a commanding front man – he sings like he owns the world and wants to fuck it.

Participantgood sound. the drummer is on it. my only qualm would be in line with Bucho’s suggestion of tweaking the lead vocal. i just feel it’s a little on the edge of his comfortable range.

ParticipantThanks for the kind words and stuff guys! I’m the drummer, and I’ll pass along the Bucho’s world-fucking advice to the singer 😉

ParticipantI have to agree with the previous comments. Overall it was nicely done. I didn’t think the singing was too nasaly for the most part, but it is something that needs to be watched. I think the trend of nasal singing is awful. It makes all the singers sound the same, and it makes them sound like they’re just whining. Or whinging. Pick your pond. When it comes to the bands with the nasal singers, I will listen for approximately two seconds before turning it off.
What stood out the most for me about the vocal was when the singer went into his upper registers he slipped on his notes a bit. That sort of thing needs to be nailed down tight.
The drums were good though, and drove the groove well.

ParticipantNeed a second vocalist for the harmonies! That’s what I really like about the original 🙂 otherwise I liked it a lot.
