ParticipantHere’s a screenshot of my desktop.
And here’s a screenshot of the desktop of a guy I know. Even though it’s not my desktop, I still thought it was interesting enough to include here.
Both are Linux desktops.

KeymasterI want to know more about that second one… what distro and gui are those?
May 5, 2006 at 12:54 am #21384digitaltopia
ParticipantThe first desktop is a Mandriva system running Gnome. I don’t remember what distro the second desktop is using, but it’s a KDE desktop using SuperKaramba.
Personally, even though I have Mandriva on my desktop computer right now, I would recommend either Ubuntu / Kubuntu or Suse. Any distro can run either Gnome or KDE (or both), and both desktops can achieve similar results, Gnome using gdesklets and KDE using SuperKaramba.

Participantwhat’s this bistro, lawn gnome, superkarma thing we’re talking about here?

KeymasterIt’s non-Windows stuff. I’m running Ubuntu now on a different box, but I’ve not spent any time really learning about it. I’d like to find out more about these gdesktets.
did I mention that today I’m pissed that I’m on a Mac? The notorious Flash plugin sucks on Mac issue plagued me all day long. Fucking shit, why can’t they make it work good on this OS?!?

ParticipantGood question. Maybe it’ll work better on the x86 Macs.
If you have any questions about Ubuntu, I’d be happy to help out. One thing to keep in mind is, when you first see the desktop, if you don’t like the way it looks or acts, you can change it in almost any way you want.
Without using anything extra, you can put panels wherever you want, hide them however you want (if you want to get really deep, you can even specify how many pixels of the panels are visible when it’s hidden, etc.) add transparency, and more. Not to mention you can change the icon theme, the controls / widget theme, and the window decoration theme (the title bar and the window control buttons) all individually to get just the overall theme you want, all with just a few clicks of the mouse.
When you start adding in desktop customization tools such as gdesklets, which are even scriptable, you can do just about anything you want.

Participantthat second screen shot looks sweet, I’ve been meaing to try Ubuntu, but haven’t ahd the time. I tried a SLAX live cd and it never got past loading the kernel.haha. I might have to look into that last one. Oh and my desktop is still the same until I change the visual style sometime soon.

Participantsome of mine, I change every couple of weeks or so.

ParticipantI believe SLAX is based on Slackware, which can be a bit finicky. Ubuntu tends to be more of an “it just works” distro.
Same desktop, different icon theme and wallpaper.

ParticipantI like the translucent clear style widgets a lot, and what menu bar are you using in that?
