More big-screen Potter fodder: ‘Deathly Hallows’ book to be split into 2 movies
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Harry Potter was the center of seven novels, but he’ll star in eight films.
The final book in the wildly successful series will be made into two films, the Los Angeles Times reported Wednesday.
Producers are expected to announce Thursday that J.K. Rowling’s last “Potter” installment, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” will be split into two parts on the big screen. The first film is slated for release in November 2010, with part two following in May 2011.
“It was born out of purely creative reasons,” producer David Heyman told the Times. “Unlike every other book, you cannot remove elements of this book.”
The two final “Potter” films will be shot concurrently, much like the blockbuster trilogy based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic fantasy novel “The Lord of the Rings.”
Another famous Tolkien tome, “The Hobbit,” is also being split into two live-action movies set for back-to-back shooting to begin next year.
Filming on the sixth “Potter” flick, “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” began in September.
“It’s been brilliant,” said star Daniel Radcliffe. “It’s also, I think, the funniest of the films so far.”
The “Potter” film franchise has pulled in $4.5 billion at the worldwide box office..March 13, 2008 at 3:58 am #4282rob
ParticipantThey’re saying that David Yates will be the director for those as well, and that kinda annoys me. But overall, kinda happy about that.

ParticipantBrilliant! Finally they got it right. I am willing to see two films that can fit the seventh book done right, instead of cramming in one.

ParticipantI already knew about the two Harry Potter movies, and I think it’s good that they’re taking the time to do it right. But when I read about the new The Hobbit movie I got a tingly in my happy place.

ParticipantThe Hobbit’s the shortest book, and they’re making it into two. That screams “money-grubbin’ whores” to me. Each of the Harry Potter books after Prisoner of Azkaban should have been two movies.

ParticipantThat’s because, in order to appeal to as wide an audience as possible, everyone’s going to gather at Bilbo’s house and play a poker tournament before they go on their adventure.

KeymasterI can see the split of the Hobbit though, the Gollum stuff is damn near half a movie. That will be the end, and all of the battle would be the second movie. I think that’s pretty obvious.

ParticipantIt is obvious. But does it really warrant two movies? Or is it just Warner trying to milk it for all it’s worth? Huh, huh, huh?
Honestly, movies have been irritating me lately. Just everyone’s willingness to put shit out instead of something good. Transformers, anyone? Alien vs. Predator, anyone? Fantastic Four, anyone?

ParticipantThere’s been good stuff recently. No Country?

ParticipantYes. Definitely. But the good:bad ratio has been very very low. Like, for every 1 good movie, there’s like 15 or 20 bad ones. Can’t argue there, can you, Mr. Smartypants?

But the answer is very simple: People are willing to fork over $10 to see “Dude, like Where’s My Mom’s Car Because I’m SuperBad!” as opposed to something that actually has meaning and purpose. It will not get any better until people stop spending their money on stupid pieces of shit and start spending their money on stuff that’s actually worthwhile. That, or we’re going to get yet ANOTHER Fast and the Furious movie or XXX.

ParticipantOr another Step Up dance movie. Oh wait, that already happened. Rusty, take your ballerina outfit off now. We know you secretly like it.
I saw tonight a preview for a new movie by that guy from Sean of the Dead. Looks like it could be funny and a whole lot of silly.

KeymasterYeah, Run Fatboy Run… I’ve seen a few variations of the trailer. Looks like pretty funny stuff to me, but not as funny as any of the other movies.

ParticipantI saw it. Didn’t really hit home with me. I did laugh pretty damn hard two times, but the rest of the time, I was checking the time.
