I really enjoyed this breakdown, and it highlights a lot of the problem I have with action movies in general. The action pauses for so many things when it’s clear it doesn’t need to pause at all. Seeing this contrast in Jackie Chan movies vs Jackie Chan’s roles in American movies put a finer point on it for me.

    Anyway… here!

That guy really nails it but I don’t know if there’s really way around some of the things it talks about in terms of directors who are trying to make actors – as opposed to martial artists – look like fighters when they don’t have as much time as Jackie does, but I’ll never understand the hard on so many people have for shaky cam fight scenes just because they have a name like “Paul Greengrass” attached.

I finally watched this, and enjoyed it immensely. I like to say “why did they hire a camera operator with Parkinson’s?” because that’s really what it’s like sometimes. I never really thought about the idea that a shaky cam or quick editing could mask a lack of actual fighting ability. It makes perfect sense.

I just want fight scenes where people fight like people. Very few people, even in law enforcement type roles, can fight beyond some basics. They certainly don’t display awkward forms like actors trained by fight choreographers do. I want a dirty, painful looking fight where it’s not so apparent who’s winning. Where you actually feel the pain, and you are actually worried about the outcome because if feels like scary chaos, and it seems like everyone has something to lose. These current action gimmicks are just that… and for me, they often (very often) slow the film down. I don’t need an obligatory fight scene that I know the outcome of, I need to see something I can believe, so that I can be invested in these “people”.

Thad one of the things I’ve been pretty impressed with in the new Bond films – I love that he gets hurt all the time. I guess deep down we know he’s not gonna die or anything, but it is better.

I liked when shiny Bond got his testicles smashed by Mads Mikkelsen and a heavy rope.
