Any of you guys ever see this movie? I saw it last night while babysitting for my bro’s kids and it’s surprisingly smart and funny, not as stock as the trailer makes it look at all. I’d watch it again even without having to use it to entertain the kids.

I might even go so far as to say this not only shot up to become my favourite non-Pixar CG animated film, it’s actually better than some of Pixar’s movies.

i’ve seen it and i have to agree with you. i would put it up against any of pixar’s mid-tier titles. and having Mr. T and Bruce Campbell doesn’t hurt either. 🙂

i loved how as i was watching it i was thinking “hey this isn’t too bad” and then by the end i was thinking “that was a great little sci-fi movie”. i was completely unprepared for the fantastic “mad scientist monster” story arc.

this one definitely gets two thumbs up from me and though this isn’t my favorite non-pixar animated film, it’s easily in my top ten. maybe even top five.

my absolute favorite non-pixar/non-anime animated flick is a french film called dragon hunters. the art style, the environments, the story. i highly recommend it.

I thought the voice cast was great all round. What I loved was how high the hit rate for the jokes was and how recurring jokes, like Steve the monkey, never got tired even though they were used over and over. I really liked the control of tone and pacing the filmmakers achieved.

After that we watched Megamind, which was fun enough but nowhere near as sharp as Cloudy Meatballs, and then about half of Ice Age III, which was 93% tired slapstick, 6% Ray Romano relationship jokes and 1% actual funny. I think watching those after just made me love Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs even more.

i never got in to any of the ice age movies. i just never could find anything in them that “clicked” with me.

i thought megamind was entertaining but definitely not Dreamworks best outing. my favorite dreamworks animated film would have to be Flushed Away. i loved the Aardman claymation style rendered in 3D. there are even frames that show “fingerprints” on some of the characters.

Yeah, Megamind stayed fun all the way through but there was nothing about it which wowed me. It’s solidly entertaining but predictable in a way that Cloudy wasn’t. I liked the design in Cloudy a lot more than most Dreamworks movies too.

I haven’t seen Flushed Away yet but I do want to check out How To Train Your Dragon. It seems quite highly regarded for another non-Pixar flick.

how to train your dragon is triple-A in every category, in my opinion. the art style is pitch-perfect fantasy. the variety of dragons is fantastic. it’s funny and not bogged down with “silly moments for the kids” stuff. come to think of it, i think this may be my favorite Dreamworks animated movie but it’s still too new to tell for sure. Flushed Away is a few years old and i still love it so i’ll have to wait and see if HtTYD holds up over the years.

but for right now it is the Dreamworks movie that i would put up against Pixar’s top-tier stuff. i couldn’t say off the cuff right now if i think it’s better than Pixar’s best (probably not) but it would be the one from Dreamworks that i would have no reservations about using in such a debate. it’s just that good.

Apparently the guys who made this movie (and 21 Jump St) are making the Lego movie now, with Chris Pratt (Parks and Rec) as the lead and Will Arnet as Lego Batman.

That’s not why I’m posting this Cloudy thing with Andy Samberg though. I’m just posting this because I found it and wanted to leave it here.

And then I did. And then I watched it again because it was so much fun.

I hate Arnet for the most part, I think he’s way over exposed for the limited funny that comes with… that said, a Lego Batman with his comedic mannerisms could be really funny.

I had no idea they were even doing a Lego movie.

Considering that almost Arnet’s entire thing (however limited it may be) is his deep sleazy voice it seems just crazy enough to work.
